Neil often bashes the Republicans when they come up with crazy/bad ideas. Granted if the Democrats would ever have a good cure for our problems then he might have positive things to say about them. I can somewhat agree that most conservative talk show hosts are like you suggested but to put Neal in that category means you have never or rarely listen.

-If I recall correctly the Republians have the majority in both houses of congress and yet he does not expect anything rational to become law. Sounds like a republican bash to me.

I don't get it; there have been a lot of whining political posts on here lately. Usually the whining is directed towards "right-wing" hosts on WSB, WGKA, WGST, etc.

Atlanta has an Air America affiliate with fascinating, entertaining and compelling Talkradio. Let's listen in to this week's Al Franken Show, shall we?:

"The Democrats are always right. The Republicans are always wrong."

Given that both left and right wing are represented on Atlanta radio, ostensibly in the proportion that listeners want to hear them, why are these posters constantly attacking right-wing hosts?

In addition to Air America, WREK and WRFG offer left-wing programming. On PeopleTV, you can watch Marxists like Big Jack Jersawitz ramble on about revolution with a red flag in the background.
 
This has nothing to do with politics. I'm saying these shows are extremely boring and predictable, whether they are preaching right wing politics OR left wing politics.

The best talk show I've heard recently was when I was on a business trip in Philadelphia. I heard one of the FM CHR jocks do a topic on "Have you ever had a date with someone who doesn't look like their picture on Match.com?"

This talk show (on Q102/Philadelphia) was hilarious, unpredictable, and tremendously entertaining.

I know this is a radical, extreme, and ridiculous viewpoint, but I've always thought the premise of a radio show was ENTERTAINING an audience. Not being an apologist for President Bush.

Your perception is your reality.

And I don't totally disagree---i find Hannity way too predictable and therefore kind of boring. But obviously all the other people out there giving Rush, Hannity, Boortz etc their good ratings must find them entertaining.

I've always said it's not Rush's views that made him popular but the style of his show..the entertainment factor. If it was only about right wing loyalty, then William F Buckley could be a talk show hit.

Wow, Boortz missed the "Have you ever had a date with someone who doesn't look like their picture on Match.com" discussion?? He must be slipping. If he had jumped on that one he may have gotten double digit ratings. Oh wait....he already does get double digit ratings. I guess he must be entertaining someone.

And, fyi, that station in Philadelphia is ranked about 15th in the market, so maybe they're not as tremendously entertaining as you may think.

Okay, I might as well get into this, too...
I'm very right-wing, very conservative, but I quit listening to Boortz a long time ago for all the reasons you mentioned. I'm tired of his rhetoric, I'm tired of him throwing his wealth and success in our faces, even in the product endorsements he ENDLESSLY promotes. That being said, the original post is off-base, I believe. Boortz does NOT rubber-stamp Bush or the Republicans. He may be the most truly Libertarian talkshow host I've ever heard, even if I AM sick of listening to him. I believe sexyvirilestud's (yeah, right!)personal dislikes OR political affiliation clouded his ability to really even listen to what Boortz usually says.

Rush has said many times on his show and in person his purpose is to get the largest possible audience and hold them for them longest possible time. He does believe what he says but he makes it as entertaining as possible. Isn't that a fudnamental of good radio..make it entertaininag and you will get and hold an audience?
 
Hmmmm. let's just check today's talking points on Neal's Nuze. "The Spendaholic GOP" Oh my goodness the Republicans are suddenly wrong. Nope. Neal has been crticizing the GOP for years. In fact neal does it so much and that is the reason that he is not a superstar like Hannity or Limbaugh. He is too much of a loose cannon and does not tow the Conservative party line. <P ID="signature">______________

So why don't you go listen to Q102, or Steve and Vikki, or 99X, or (whoever is doing Lite's morning show this week)...where they actually do topics like that...and you can be entertained by what I'm SURE was a simply HILARIOUS discussion. Yuk Yuk Yuk!

Let me ask you one simple question: Do you think WSB's audience uses "Match.com"?

No offense, but suggesting the Neal Boortz abandon the political talk that his 13-share audience expects of him for the last 20 years in favor of dumb lifestyle topics like the one you talk about below is such a mind-bogglingly STUPID suggestion that it could only come from the mind of a Clear Channel Atlanta programming executive.

And all these years I'd been thinking the real premise of a radio show was to GET an audience. Boy do I feel silly! I'd always considered the Boortz show and its tremendous ratings a shining success, but it turns out I've been using the wrong measure of success. Thanks for explaining it to us. I'm gonna send a copy of your post to all the folks in the WSB Sales Department. I'm sure they'll march right into Boortz' office, tell him that he's been doing it all wrong and demand that he FIX this problem immediately!

I have no idea to what you are referring, as my boss doesn't even listen to Rush, but it's clear you are a bitter person.

About what I wonder?

Don't be hateful. Maybe someday you'll get lucky and you'll be able to get out of the 2-share hellhole you're working in now and move on to a better, brighter, and MUCH higher paying job than the one you have now...as many of us have already done.

Why they listen....

I won't insult you, or resort to 3rd grade name-calling since I believe this discourages the marketplace of ideas. In fact, I will even agree with you on several points: Boortz is highly successful, gets monster ratings, and is a legendary radio personality whose success speaks for itself.

My original post never questioned whether Mr. Boortz is popular or successful. My post merely questioned whether his show is ENTERTAINING, and whether using every second of your program to reiterate support for President Bush carries any intrinsic entertainment value.

Also, a show can be very popular without being entertaining. In the case of the right-wing talk shows, listeners tune in for validation of their political views. Most people in this country are on the right-wing these days (just look at the last presidential election), and these people seek out radio hosts who can validate their views of the world. We want people to agree with us, and tell us we're right.

In my case, I encourage dissent and alternate viewpoints, but I wonder whether these views can be expressed without vitriol and Ad Hominem attacks.

----And if you ever really listen to Boortz, and as others here have pointed out, the basis of that statement is invalid. He criticizes both political parties at length...which you would know if you really listened to the program. The "entertainment value" you speak of is apparent in the fact that he is #1 in the market, with double-digit ratings, book after book after book after book. Enough people are "entertained" by him to have made him the successful for this long.
