Katie Couric, Radio Implications.

• “Katie Couric's September 5 debut on The CBS Evening News will NOT be the biggest NEWS event in TV's New Fall Season. This will be the biggest event in ALL of television's New Fall Season.
• Bottom line: This is a franchise, for CBS Radio Network affiliates smart-enough to milk it.
• You go girl.

• Look for Katie to fall flat on her face. OK, she's a babe, whose only is experience is doing morning fluff. Glass ceiling my left ankle! Another example of broads in broadcasting being handed jobs for which they are not qualified and which they have done nothing to deserve. Anyone remember Sally Quinn? Or even the last News Barbie to read the evening news off a TeleprompTer for CBS, Connie Chung?
• Look for Katie to experience the agony of defeat. With any luck, they'll wake up and bring back Schieffer.

• I'm skeptical about Ms. Perky anyway. Doesn't seem serious enough for me. Definitely not a sexist thing, as there are some very good female reporters out there (Christiane Amanpour is one of the best in the business). I would have preferred someone like Aaron Brown or Anderson Cooper. Serious, hard-nosed, non-biased newsguys with a little bit of attitude. But that wouldn't have gotten nearly the press that Ms. Jackie Tyler Keaton would have. I'll pass on Ms. You Go Girl.

• Let's all meet back here on September 5, 2007, and see where The CBS Evening News ranks, vs. ABC/NBC newscasts.
• Not September, 2006, which will likely see a spike from curiosity sampling.
• September, 2007, one year later.
• And bring all your clippings. We'll see who's had more Time/Newsweek covers, USA Today/local newspaper stories, etc. Maybe y'all are right. Maybe all-of-America will have doted more on Charles Gibson and Brian Williams. Or that lad Shep. Heck, he's wearing more make-up than Katie. Maybe he'll be #1.
• Meet you here then...

• I'm archiving this and making a note in my PDA one year hence. We will indeed see how CBS Ranks relative to ABC/NBC.
• Let's skip the clippings, though. I'll concede right now that she'll have more of those. All that will prove is that news magazines are even less relevant than anyone's evening news.
• Wherever Katie Couric ranks relative to ABC and NBC, one thing is for sure: There will be even fewer people watching any evening newscast one year from now than there are today.

CBS sticking with Couric's ailing newscast
By Paul J. Gough
NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Couric's stint at "CBS Evening News" started with promise, a new approach to the traditional newscast that the network hoped would bring in and keep the millions of viewers who have turned away from the evening newscasts. But it has turned into a $15 million-a-year disappointment so far for CBS, which has found itself remaining in third place even with the former morning star in the anchor chair.
