I have a question for those of you who might be familiar with WAJR (1440) in Morgantown. In the late sixties and early seventies the line-up was like this:
Morning Drive-Russ Morley (Yes I know the stories and yes they are accurate.)
Mid Day-Woody O'Hara-The PD and the nicest guy you'd ever want to work for or with. Woody was the exact opposite of someone else in the line-up. There was absolutely no hint of ego problems or attitude problems. He was/is an award winning sports broadcaster. The biggest lesson to be learned from Woody is the contrast between a prima-dona and a great guy. Woody was the GREAT guy!
Afternoon Drive-Bill Fox. We'll touch on him later.
Nights-John Beauchamp who went by the name of Sir Thomas Beauchamp. Sir Thomas was the definition of a Class Act. It was clear to everyone he was much too
high of quality to be working nights in a small market. After graduating from WVU he moved onto Louisville. I had heard he was either GM or GSM of WHAS.
News-Nat Saffel. Nat had a great voice for the job and was generally a pretty decent guy.
Mr. Snake-There was a guy who worked overnight I think who was nothing more than a troublemaker...spreading rumors about other staff members, trying to stir up infighting. You know those types.
Anyway, back to Bill Fox. Anybody know whatever happened to him? He did afternoon drive and opened his program with, I think, the theme from the Match Game. One day he gave notice and cleared out. He also was one of those talented guys who you just knew should be in a bigger market. When I asked around, nobody seemed to know where he went. Anybody around these parts know? I realize I made a mistake above. Let me correct it now. Bill Fox was the PD. When he left, Woody was made PD.
Oh yes, WVU football PBP was Woody doing color and the fantastic Jack Fleming doing the PBP...the same Jack Fleming who did Steeler PBP.
