Let's make July 4 "Independents" Day

Just thought I'd throw this out:

On July 4, watch your local independent station, if your market still has one. Indies seem to be an endangered species; let's support them!

Los Angeles: KDOC 56
Phoenix: KTVK 3

feel free to add to this list whatever town you're in. :)

In New York, WPIX, while a CW station, calls themselves "PIX 11". Does that count? :)

And what about nearby WRNN in upstate New York? They're not affiliated with any network, but consider over half of their programming hours is made up of infomercials... They do air "Cheers" reruns, though...

I would consider it, but the Sunday programming lineup on KTVK outside of news programs is lacking.

There's also KAZT, but they're pay-for-pray on Sundays.

Phoenix/Prescott also has KAZT 7. LA also has KCAL 9, if an indie owned by a network counts. Chicago has WCIU 26.

Indianapolis has WIIH-CA and WALV-CA, both of which run weather loops from WISH and WTHR, respectively.

KTBU and KNWS in Houston. KTBU is known as Houston's 55 (used to be known as the Tube -- no relation to the failed network) and broadcasts a mix of classics (Cheers, Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum P.I.) and newer fare (Frasier, Reno 911, Punk'd), plus Better and the Daily Buzz, complete with local inserts. They're adding Rachael Ray in the fall, a pickup from NBC affiliate KPRC.

KNWS was started as a 24-hour local news channel, but abandoned that format after a couple years. Now there's no local news at all, just a bunch of infomercials and, from 5 to 10:30 p.m., Cosby, Cold Case Files, Cheaters, Roseanne, Judge Hatchett and Street Court. Pretty sad.

I do watch 3 on Sat and sometimes Sunday AM to catch Tess Rafols (don't you just love that name?) and the news but otherwise The Place With More Estrogen TM just misses my testosterone viewing habits.

They're flipping to Azteca America at some point.

Here in Denver, we have.....

KWGN 2 (CW) Although still a CW affiliate, they downplay it by time-shifting the primetime lineup by an hour in lieu of a 7:00 PM newscast & not even including the CW logo on the station's logo

KCDO 3 (Retro TV) Although the "Local" 10:00 PM news is imported from IA via KGWN 5 (CBS) in Cheyenne, WY, I would have to say this former network affiliate counts (Especially since it was a satellite station of KTVD 20 & later KGWN 5)

KWHD 53 (Independent) The only REAL Independent station Denver has. But the achillies heel of this station is that much of its programming is courtroom shows or religious programs. That said though, LeSea Broadcasting has proven that it can do with television what Salem Broadcasting does with Radio by not being afraid to take chances & pull surprises with some of its program choices (NASCAR Angels comes to mind here).

THAT said though, I'm SHOCKED to see that CBS hasn't approached LeSea Broadcasting & KWHD management about producing a 9:00 PM version of CBS 4 News like CBS did with KJJZ 14 doing the same with a 9:00 PM version of KUTV's CBS 2 News (Or whatever they call it) in Salt Lake City, UT

Cheers :D

And yet, KPRC is still sitting on the rights to "Dr. Phil..." Don't ask him how that's workin'...

That is EXACTLY the fate that the aforementioned WRNN on the previous page of the thread is experiencing/has experienced - RNN = "regional news network" - now reduced to an hour (at most) of news programming per day, mixed with "Cheers" reruns and "Inside Edition" double-runs. This, like KNWS, during primetime, though WRNN usually resumes infomercials at about 8:30 PM now.

How long has it been since you checked this? As of June 1, 2010, there is no LeSEA-owned station called KWHD in Castle Rock/Denver anymore; it's now KETD and is owned by Liberman Broadcasting. Given its new owner and calls, it is likely an Estrella TV outlet now and if it isn't, it will be soon.

In Charlotte, we have WAXN, but does that really count? It's always been programmed by Cox when it was an LMA and now owned outright by them. And yes, they show the "It bleeds it leads, news at 10. Produced by sister station: We Show Only Crime Channel 9

WJTC-DT is a former UPN affiliate licensed to Pensacola, FL and serving the Mobile-Pensacola market. It chose independence instead of MyNetworkTV during the UPN/WB/CW shakeup. Their on-air branding is 'UTV 44, The Gulf Coast Superstation'.
