Thats the problem with the radio programmer types. They think they know everything, but they really are ignorant to what hard-core, devoted radio listeners want to hear.
Don't kid yourself into thinking that the 13th largest radio market shares the same belief you do.

Huh! Just because you disagree with me, that doesn't mean that the 13th largest market disagrees! I would submit to you that I could program a station to higher ratings than you could!

That would be the sucker bet of the new millennium - hell, I'd take AQH's side on that one in a heartbeat. Sorry Mack - you're probably capable of programming numbers into your cell phone speed dial, but you'd NEVER beat AQH in programming a station to higher ratings.

Uh....yeah, sure.

Wouldn't it depend on the format? I know I could program a better oldies/classic hits station than whomever is programming KJR FM and improve the ratings.

I'm sure I could! Based on the sagging ratings of the radio stations around here I know I could improve them.

I don't think I would be able to do classical. But any sort of rock or pop format, or news and talk, I could do better than AQH Guru.

That's an amusing statement Summer Daddy. Frankly based on your posts, I doubt you could program a police scanner in a crime wave.

I'd stick to honing your skills on the mic at your current profession. Just because you can't play music when working the drive-through Mack, doesn't mean you can't have an impact with your tone and inflection. ;)

Tell you what, why don't you go into detail on what you would do for these three stations....

1. Jack FM
2. Movin'
3. KOMO

Three different situations for each of those stations, all of them face unique challenges. Tell us what you would do.

Jack-FM Great Oldies- an under-filled niche
Movin' innovative Alt Coumtry format (Sandusky not in country or AAA, which this would be a combo of) Would perform well in Seattle.
KOMO Liberal News/Talk with great local hosts. It's time.

With Jack you'd need to review the playlist song by song to really program it but in general I'd stick to 1985-2000 mainstream rock / power pop / alternative.

I'd hire somebody like DJ NoName or Rossetti or some other recognized northwest DJ to record 2 hours a day or 5 hours a week of

slice of life observations / rants
person of the street questions
pose a question - take the ten best phone in responses
mini-phone interviews with local notables / visiting music artists
mini-clips of notables introducing one of their favorite songs with more flavor of why

Then mix that stuff in with the other Jack voicework or maybe replace the existing snarkiness.

Diva, I like your idea for KOMO. Local progressive talk/news would be great. I enjoy AM 1090 but I hate the delayed broadcasts. Lets get Erin Hart back on the air in Seattle!

Erin Hart is awesome! Dave Ross is pretty good too, but he just happens to be on the same time as Thom Hartmann who I like even better! I sure would like to hear Bill Gallant and Alan Prell again too!

Are you going to answer, Mack Daddy?
Lonely Mack's silence on the topic of their programming ability speaks volume.

What we do know is Cheesy Mack likes left-wing talk hosts and paid, (aka informercial) programming. Too bad all the left-leaning hosts are leaving the air to pursue more lucrative employment, (and political careers).

But we must remember, radio is no good unless it plays what the few on this board want at any given time. Forget numbers of listeners, or that it's a business; just by playing low-rated left wing talk, do-wop oldies, plus garage bands from Kent, radio will return to it's glory of the 1970s. Yeah, right...

Not all the left leaning hosts are leaving. I can only think of Al Franken, and he was replaced by another left leaner. So that blows your theory right out the door. Yes, I do say I could program the radio stations better than you. The reason I haven't told you what I would do is I don't give out advice for free. I'm just sittin' here waiting til you self described radio gurus put yourselves out of business, which is exactly what happens when you program the stations out of existence. Then I will swoop in and fix the formats and radio will be great again!

Isn't Alan Colmes a left leaning host? I know he left (ha ha) the Hannity and Colmes tv show, is he still doing his radio show? And please no doo wop oldies! Heard enough doo wop to last me a lifetime and a half! Garage bands from Kent? Maybe. I'd be more interested in hearing what's coming out of the Burien area.

What about the recent announcement that Rachel Maddow is and has abandoned left-talk radio for her show on MSNBC? (That's a cable TV network). Rachel was one of the most popular left-talk radio network hosts in the US. Well that is if you consider the overall low ratings of left-talk as a format... Don't get me wrong, as left-talk radio shows go, I think personally that Stephanie Miller is a great host. It's just that for whatever reason, politically left-leaning radio listeners don't seem to adequately support in numbers, left-talk radio the way right-talk listeners do.

Based on your posts Mack, I wouldn't hold your breath that us radio execs will be banging down your door to save the day. In order to fix a business, you need to understand it first. Again purely based on your comments here, when it comes to radio, you clearly don't know much.

What about Tacoma bands? Alan Colmes left his TV show, well who could blame him? Hannity never let him talk anyway. But Alan still has his own radio show, ON Satellite! Rachell Maddow left her radio show, but she was replaced by another lefty, Ron (young) Reagan.
