Let's Rank The Best Valley Newscasters

Who do you feel is the best radio news person in the Valley (Fresno and Bakersfield)?

KERN - Best: Donielle Sullivan

KUZZ - Best: Mark Howell

KMJ - Best: Margaret Carrero

KYNO - do they have local news?

KNZR - do they have local news?

am I forgetting any stations?

KNZR's strong morning news presence is still that of Kathy King. Kathy and Woody Chaves (who built KNZR's News Department) established a long tradition of credibility that rivals any other news presence in the morning. That's stand-alone strength..with or without partnering with any local television station. It was my presence to work with them for a couple of years in the mid 90's.

Don't Forget About Modesto And Stockton!

Don't forget the Northern End Of The Valley (Modesto&Stockton). DIRK KOOYMAN has always done a good newscast at KJOY-99.3 as well as KWG-1230, years ago. TIM ST. MARTIN used to do a good newscast when he was at KFIV-1360. Is Tim still with KMPH? Any Others?

GUYFRIED,

You must be kidding about Kathy King.
Talk about your "rip n read".
Nice voice, but no work ethic.
Have you ever seen a KNZR mic flag at the scene of a big story? NO.

Agreed. I did not even realize K King was on KNZR. That station has no news value at all. Glenn Beck and Rush yes - but no news.

KERN's news product is really suffering. KUZZ is still solid.

KMJ is far and away the valley leader. Great presence and coverage.

KERN has slipped news-wise. Bakersfeld as a whole is a blackhole for news these days. Radio news is junk and the tv talent is worse. Donielle S and Howell are worth listening to though. But you need to carve out a half hour between Cox's rambling and Garth's crooning to catch a newscast.

Fresno is definitely a step up in talent and coverage. Yes, KMJ dominates. Morning news does very well. Appleton slows the show though.

Tim St. Martin still does a great newscast, on AM 840 The Patriot in Modesto.

Thanks Jim! I haven't listened to KMPH since the switch from ADULT STANDARDS to NEWS/TALK. I know THE MORNING MAYOR is on at 10:AM but I am usually at work at that time. I hope you will increase the LOCAL TALK at KMPH?

Here's a fun game to play in Bakersfield...the KNZR Noon News game...before Ed (EJ) Tyler delivers the news in the noon hour, guess if the lead story will be a shooting, stabbing or robbery...my money's on shooting today.

Roddmania----- You forgot Fire and Car accident. hehehehe

Motto's for this city's radio and tv news departments should include the old "If it bleeds it leads" or the other good one "We're there if you feed us".

I think Mark Howell is the best. One of the worst would be the KERN seat holders.
These are the board ops turned news readers (uhh,I mean news "I'm still learning how to read outloud" readers.I miss hearing Jeff Lemucchi's smooth voice on KERN but he's suited for the television job he holds currently.

The news and traffic people they thrown in on KRAB and the Fox are also hard to digest.

p.s. Anyone know what ever did become of Woody Chavez? I forgot all about him until I read his name above.

Somebody told me that former KNZR news director Woody Chaves (pronounced Chay-viss) is working under a different name at KNBR in San Francisco. On their website, under "Contact Us: Look under "The Bullpen" (behind the scenes. The smiling face of one "Ray Woodson" sure looks like
"Woody" of Bakersfield's yesteryears. One of the best I've ever worked with, by the way. He SHOULD
be missed. A real no-nonsense newsman back then ..and now a big market sportscaster. Still has quality written all over him.

Smooth voice yes, but I hear Lemucci is a real head case. Seems he also really alienated himself when he took a big pay left KERN for KGET. Brilliant. How long did that last? Just ask his former co-anchors (curtis or bailey) how they feel about the guy. Now tv "talent" must deal with his ego.

No strech there. Jeff Lemmucci was always known as a hot head when he was in radio. Have not heard much on the street about him since he got hired at 29.
Did Bill Curtis get whacked at KERN? Do not hear him anymore.
Ralph Baily made everything sound like a joke when he teamed with Jeff L. at KGET. He was not good at all. The one thing I remember about the old KGET was Lemmuchi would read the same stories Monday morning that he read the Friday prior. Is that typical in radio news? I hope not.

AND JUST TO FOLLOW UP, HOW WILL THE MOVE TO 1180 AFFECT KERN'S NEWS PRODUCT? WILL THEY CONTINUE TO CUT BACK AND JUST DROP IT COMPLETELY TO CUT COSTS?
???
