Let's staff "Fresh".

I know it's a bit early, but let's give CBS a hand in staffing the new, "Fresh 105.9".

Mornings, middays, afternoons and evenings.

Keep in mind the other players in the market, specifically WTMX and WLIT.

Should they go Christmas too, or play their format opposite 'LIT?

Knock yourselves out!

I am not employed by CBS. Will I be authorized to offer on-air positions? How will I be compensated? Just little details I need to know before proceeding with staffing 'the new Fresh'

They most definitely should not go X-mas. This is a great opportunity for them to establish their music mix.

Speaking on The Mix...they should grab some Mix jocks. The evening guy (think his name is Jeff Quarter) is really great.

How about:
6a-10a=Landecker
10a-2p=Cara Carriveau
2p-6p=Jeff Quarter
6p-10p=Tanya (since they knocked her off Jack to make room for Dahl, it'd be nice to throw her a job)

Edwards, Winston, Middleton ... there are plenty more jocks available in the market right now. They should have no trouble filling out their line-up.

It would make sense for them to strike now as non-Christmas AC "Fresh" to gain listeners from Lite, who will likely be all-Christmas by next week.

When "Fresh" launched here in New York, it was right after the New Year; 102.7 was criticized for not dumping its rhythmic AC "Mix 102.7" format earlier to snag listeners from Lite, but these days, 102.7 seems to be holding their own somewhat.

That seemed to be the thinking all along. Wait for WLIT to go Christmas, then launch 105.9 (not sure about the Fresh name... Feder didn't mention it explictly in the latest piece though he knows darn well what Fresh is, but still quite likely) as the mainstream AC. With WLIT rumored some places to be making the flip on Nov. 2, it lines up perfectly.

Unlike New York, however, we have 100.3 WILV. To those unfamiliar with the station, it is somewhat rhythmic and upbeat, but extremely directionless. I've heard Level 42 into The Supremes within the last month. They're probably not going Christmas either, so who knows how that will play into the situation.

PD Mark Edwards
AM Fred Winston
Midday, PM, basic liner readers
Nights, John Tesh voicetracked or liner readers

The Fresh format is based on having real basic jocks. The talent will sound better than the WLIT talent, but don't look for anyone who will get big money. The only exception is monrings, and Edwards and Winston are tight.

So what you're saying is Chicago has it's own "My 106.1"/Philadelphia clone! ;D

I think it would be a mistake for CBS to follow the NY model with virtually no name talent and liner card readers. It would also be a mistake to stock it with syndicated "talent" too. All you have to do is look at WLIT to see that Whoopie and Delilah were mistakes. I think a signature talent, not necessarily AM drive could anchor the station. Love FM when they first signed on did that with the Love Notes guy and it worked pretty well. Why they changed their minds is anybodys guess.

Not really. Isn't "My 106.1" essentially a knock-off of Movin'? WILV has a lot more 70's product, so in that way it's a bit more office-friendly although the variety is extremely bizarre. The 5:00 hour yesterday featured mostly 70's R&B, outside of three songs: A-Ha's "Take on Me", Londonbeat "I've Been Thinking About You," and The Cars "My Best Friend's Girl". The station is owned by Bonneville, a company quite limited in its format repertoire, and is targetted toward a suburban audience - cut the rock songs, go for an urban audience, and they'd have a soft urban AC on their hands that could very well take some numbers from WVAZ.

93.9 WLIT certainly has the most to lose in the launch of the new 105.9, but keep your eye on WILV too - if 105.9 is anywhere near as successful as WWFS in New York, there's no way that WILV can continue untweaked.

No Jocks,

New 105.9, The best new music available.
New Springstein, New Foo Fights, New Cult, New Britney, New Robert Plant and Alison Krause....
If it's new music, you'll find it here. A friendly voice introduces and identifies the band and song before and after.

Why just steal from WLIT and WTMX when you can steal from everyone?

Mark Edwards will not be involved with the new station directly, according to a direct statement from him on Mike Anderson's St. Louis radio site stlmedia.net. He says he has no plans to leave St. Louis. Edwards says all he knows of the CKG flip is what he has read in the trades.
