LET'S SUGGEST SOME FORMAT CHANGES FOR 2012!

Remember a couple decades ago, though, when there was a sudden interest in _shortwave_ because
of the Gulf War and other world events? I was even into it for awhile. One show I liked--broadcast
Fri nights at 11:30 pm at the time--was BBC Worldwide's Vintage Chart Show (a countdown of
pop hits from a year long ago). These days with other options including the Net, interest in
_Shortwave_ may have gone down a bit.

There's not much left on the SW bands these days. Many international broadcasters have shut down, reduced hours or stopped directing transmissions to North America. The hams are still there, discussing the weather, their antennas, and their aches and pains, but most of the "utility" traffic (ships, planes, military, misc. government) is now conducted digitally or over the internet. The internet, the end of the Cold War and the depressed economy have combined to render SW pretty insignificant. The only growth areas are Godcasting and way-out-there right-wing talk -- I'm talking survivalist and neo-Nazi stuff, not Rush.

Why? He wanted WJIB for a reason. No one but radio geeks remember WMRE...plus CC owns those calls in Winchester VA on AM 1550.

True, no one remembers WMRE-1510.... however had I thought of it back in 1992, I may have gotten WMRE for 740. Wasn't til about 2001 that I thought of "The MemoRiEs Station" as the slogan. By then, "WJIB" was in place for about 10 years. And now, after 20 years, best ot leave it as is, even if WMRE were to become available.

One interesting tidbit.... in 1980, 740-Cambridge applied for, and got, but never used: "WRPW". And I have no idea what that stood for. Any guesses?

I do remember WMRE (because I am a radio geek!); I listened to Morgan White Jr on it (and maybe a bit of Bob Katzen,
Marcia Masters, etc.) They actually simulcast the Joan Rivers show from the fledgling Fox network since
Ch 25 was still owned at the time by Pat Robertson and they didn't want to carry it, so WMRE had the
audio. When the station was sold ("Why are you leaving, Morgan?," one caller asked. "It's not me, the
whole STATION's gone," he replied) they wound up going off air for awhile. I still have about 90 minutes
of Morgan's farewell show (including newscasts from Mutual, I believe; promos for shows like "The Fun
Show With The Flicker", etc.) Morgan said to his callers, "If you're owed a prize by us, and need to pick it
up...I wouldn't wait too long if I were you!" This was in late January, 1987.

There was a farewell party at The Breakfast Club, a restaurant/bar at the corner of Brookline Ave. and
Boylston St., and I attended it (have a beer...and an omelette...) Bob Katzen was there, I think Chris.
Lydon popped by, etc.

Before the talk format ("Stay on top, 1510...WMRE") they were big bands and I think Alan Dary was a DJ there? (Dary's obit--he passed in '09--doesn't mention WMRE, but it does say WXKS 1430. Maybe that was where he was a DJ and I confused the two)

Dary obit http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/bostonglobe/obituary.aspx?n=alan-dary&pid=133875987&fhid=4704

I also remember WMRE; quite nicely programmed, too. And there was also 1510's time as WNRB, Boston's Blessing, as they tried to outmuscle WROL and WEZE.

Bill Marlowe was doing mid-days on WMRE. Alan Derry was definitely on 1430-WXKS the competitor. I know, as I was Station Manager at WXKS at that time. - Next question, Alan Derry's son, who used to be GM at WKBR in the mid 1980's.... where is he now?

Spelled Dary though, wasn't it? I had read about him being a standards DJ in the paper, plus note the obit.
Marlowe used to voice ads for Floramo's Restaurant in Chelsea and the phrase "the meat falls off
the bone" became a bit of a running joke on Jerry Williams' and Howie's (years back) shows.

Saw this online

>>Alan Dary, Boston radio and television personality passed away peacefully at age 89...on October 2, 2009...After a few years (at WGIR) and the resurgence of his “good music”, he went back to Boston to WXKS where they had recently introduced The Music of Your Life format.

I used to listen to one of my all-time favorite Boston DJ's, "Little Walter's Time Machine", on WMRE in the early/mid-'80s.

1510 also had the distinction of being the only Boston station that used two incompatible modes of broadcasting analog AM Stereo at different times. It first used the Kahn/Hazeltine system as easy listening WSSH-AM for a couple of years in the mid/late '80s (after it was WMRE), and I think it was the only Boston station to ever use that system.

It was then shut off and 1510 was back to mono through a number of format changes in the early '90s until it switched on Motorola C-Quam AM Stereo as religious WNRB in 1995, which was shut off permanently a couple of years later after the format was flipped to sports.

"Boston Need Urban AC !!" ;D
You're right! Let's blow up Talk 96.9 and make it an urban AC with live jockeys 24/7 and gospel music all day Sundays.
And "Oh, oh, no!
No Tom Joyner Morning Show!"

In his 96.9 days Jay Severin used to joke that if his/the station's popularity fell, "Kenny G" (smooth jazz) "will soon be back"...
It depends how much $ WTKK makes, etc but if Talk 1200 should move to FM that could affect their ratings and income...but 96.9 could well stay talk esp. if they should sign Howie.

How about an end to the Muttnansky experiment? They couldn't have signed him to a very long or expensive contract. About once a week I try to listen, but I end up turning it off every time. Why not try John Ryder or bring back Dale or try Pete Sheppard? How about Bob Ryan? He'd be great. Are nerds now included in affirmative action? I don't get it.
