Let's take a small test

Try and listen to 94.5 the buzz (the only signal I can pick up in my building) for nine hours a day for five days and see if you can keep from throwing yourself out of the window. PLease please please expand your playlist FOR THE LOVE OF PETE!!!!!

You can add KKRW to that list, too. You are guaranteed to hear "More Than A Feeling" by BOSTON and at least one version of "COME TOGETHER" everyday. Not exactly the "largest" classic rock library that they advertise. ::)

kacc has a better playlist than da buzz or da arrow. so much for focus groups and consultants.

I first checked out KACC about 15 years ago, and now I've really outgrown their demo. Not that my opinion has changed though: what a great little station!

KACC is a great little rock station. Way better than KTBZ/KKRW.

Happy landings, fred! Remember, it's not the fall that kills, it's the sudden st---SLLLLLAT!

I'm not a radio guy I'm a listener and what I see now compared to what I grew up with is unreal. The corparate world has treated me like a sheep in the field, testing me for what they think I might like and what I don't.The radio was always on and the music that I loved was always on it somewhere.I thought it was real funny when Wendy Miller could talk about the new Bob Seger CD but couldn't really play it ( she did I heard it I love you Wendy) why doesn't somebody listn to

Excuse me I was interupted, why doesn't some body listen to us. The new music sucks and not that many people are buying it.I would like to see a forrmat that played all rock new and old, and had air personalitys that the everyday guy like me could identify with.

If you can believe, KNRG is a pretty decent classic rock station, It stays on the air also. It has a pretty good playlist. I'm fortunate enough though to be able to pull in KISS also in Lavaca county, so I can listen to the Buzz or Kiss ;).

Trust me BigThunder people listen to you, and fortunately don't follow your advice. Buzz and Arrow are both doing very well in the PPM ratings game. Buzz in consistantly in the top 3 for A25-54 and Arrow typically ranks between 5th and 7th A25-54. So CC has the 2 top rated Rock stations in Houston. Isn't the goal to win the ratings game; or has the dynamic changed?

You guys may not like it but radio is no longer a mom and pop business. Most of the majors are fortune 500 companies who are in this to make money and please stockholders. Ratings deliver revenues, that's the name of the game.

Focusing on any other metric is foolish and old fashioned.

You might find it easier to plead you case with some of the area college stations or maybe you should just dust off your album collection and pull out your linear tracking turn table.

Good luck

I just had to laugh at this. CC has the two top rock stations in Houston because they have the ONLY two rock stations in Houston. It's easy to be #1, when no one else is in the race. Let another company bring a rock station to Houston on a true Houston stick, and the Arrow and the Buzz won't be touting those numbers.

Then why haven't they? That's the big question. Because the market wouldn't support it. If it could make someone money, it would have already happened. This is a $$ business. Companies want a return for their investment. If this market could support a station, it would have it. Blame it on "corporate radio" (a term that makes me laugh by the way). But the truth is, no mom & pop outfit could afford to come in and buy a station, and sustain it for a year or more before it makes a profit. Big companies want the money right now.. thus, no Active Rock station in town. If there was money to be made CC would have one here. Sad? Maybe. True? yup.
I've said it before. If KACC had ANY brains behind it, they would be a flame throwing Active Rock station. They don't rely on ratings to stay afloat. They could do it and get away with it. The audience that wants it would put up with their crap signal. But what does the "Gulf Coast Joker" do? Play the same tired Blue Oyster Cult crap they everyone hates. Why? because it's safe.. and it's easy. I've never understood why in the world they didn't do something with their signal. Rock it out.. who cares if you don't get ratings.. you don't have to anyway. But that's just my opinion. But to me it's laughable to hear someone who wasn't even a gleam in their daddies eye... backselling a record that came out about two decades before they were born. But what do I know?

Being #3 25-54 is good for "The Buzz", but being between 5th & 7th for a station, whose target demo is the 25-54 audience, is lousy. You think maybe if they expand the playlist a little, freshen up some of the liners, drops, and maybe some of the bits during the Morning Show that they might get a few more listeners, and maybe move up to 3rd or 4th, maybe higher? That's the problem with radio now. Everyone is content with mediocrity. And, then they wonder why they are losing listeners and ratings. Just like everything else, people listen to consultants, do everything at the corporate level, instead of the market level. It's also all these cuts in staff that Clear Channel has made that has affected how stations sound. A lot of these PD/MD types are too busy with other duties and their own airshifts to really focus on quality and music. Therefore, you get a glorified, homogenized jukebox, with a "voice" introducing music and giving out straight liner promos and PSA's. No personality whatsoever (not everyone, but most). It is just frustrating to listen to local radio (in just about every market) now, because you know how it used to sound. You know how it SHOULD sound, and there is really nothing you can do about it, because the so-called corporations think they know best. And, they wonder why all of them are complaining that they are losing money and listeners?! ::)

I know of about 35 stations in this market that would love to stake the claim to the #5 or #7 spots, it's a pretty profitable position to be in Snoman. How could you possibly say it's lousy? I'd be curious to know where your station (s) rank?

If it's so easy, like Purple Man says, you guy's should do it. With all of your knowledge and expertise it should be no problem convincing one of the big companies with the big sticks to invest in your ideas right?

You’re absolutely right, easy money. Being in the top 10 isn’t' easy. And those guys who bust their tails at CCRock are doing just that; dusting their tails.

Radio is for the masses; not for any of us. We nit-pick it to death; they don't. We listen with a fine-tooth earbud; they don't. We'll always think it sucks, they don't. And radio people don't care what we think; they care that THEY think.

In terms we can all understand: Radio = Light Beer. Make lots of a crappy product and the masses will love it. I'll never understand that.

Market saturation and lack of meaningful competition.
Being in the top ten of two is the same as being in the top fifty percent and the bottom fifty percent at the same time.
