Let's talk about jack.

As long as we're talking about local stations, let's talk about Jack for a second. an article in the UT from a few days ago says that Jack will be looking for a new morning team to replace J&J, and that eventually Greg and Jen will come back to afternoon drive on the station. I'm not sure I'm getting this. If Jack is supposed to be music-intensive, what's the point of filling the two most important shifts of the day with talking? It almost seems as though they are desperately trying to hold on to the remaining Star listeners by combining elements of star with elements of jack. If that's the case, then why did they bother blowing up Star in the first place? No, I'm not a radio pro, and no, I've never programmed a station in my life, but I am a radio listener and enthusiast and, in my opinion, they should either try to be Star or try to be Jack, not some weird hybrid of the two.

Quite a few Jack stations have added personalities after the initial couple of rating periods. There's a good reason for it - no matter how big your playlist, it will get stale after a while. Personalities (good ones) contribute freshness and complement the music, not obscure it.

It makes sense to eventually bring personalities to Jack.

Which ones?
Last time I checked, none of the Jacks owned by Infinity had personalities.
They didn't even even have dj's LOL.

Not all Jacks are Infinity owned; it's a licensed format.

All of Rogers' Jack stations in Canada (including the original in Vancouver) have AM & PM drives, and several have hosted weekend middays.

But that's in Canada.
I don't think we should include the Canadian Jacks. In the US, they are licensed by a different group, so I don't think it's the same concept exactly, IMHO.

Canada is where the whole JACK concept started. To ignore how they have developed would be silly.

IMHO, I believe too many radio people around the country are stuck on this "Jack has no jocks, so it sucks" mindset. Remember, boys & girls- we are very early in the development of most JACK or Variety Hits stations- many, in fact, most new radio stations sign-on jockless and have for years.

The attept at the "corporate's saving money buy cutting jocks" conspiracy theory is a dud. Time to get past it.

You're right, but some Jack stations have been on the air long enough to get jocks. Ben FM in Philly has been on since either February or March. It is now August, this long without jocks? Loooong time! How long do you think it will take. Predict some numbers oldiescat.

Jack in Denver has had personalities for several months now...and it is horrible. The whole premise of the station is ruined when a boring "That was, This is" jock comes on after a song. Howard Cogan (the Jack-FM voice) is so good at creating the "anti-business-as-usual" vibe, and the writing is usually very good too. For me, when a run-of-the mill dj comes on it lets the air out of the tires. It's like seeing behind the Wizard of Oz's curtain..."Oh this is just another typical radio station with boring dj's. On that note, I think Jack could have some personalities, but all over the country, and especially here in San Diego, there are a lot of people on the air who shouldn't be.

As noted by the Toronto Globe & Mail newspaper, Rogers broadcasting has the exlusive right to Jack in Canada after "It licensed the name JACK-FM and tagline "playing what we want" from Bob Perry, who had worked in the radio industry for years, and used them on his website in the U.S." Just recently the first non-Rogers Canadian station bought a license to use Jack-FM.

The founder of the Jack concept has links to all of the Jack stations, US and Canada on his site at http://www.jack.fm/ and all of the stations do go got the same basic concept but it probably has a certain amount of latitude, although one online source, Wikipedia, said that Jack stations were required to NOT have live jocks during the first couple of months: that must be an old rule or there must be an exception for morning shows.
