The ABSOLUTE BEST Top 40 station Cleveland ever had!
Early 80s...Phil Gardner's Superstars in the morning, Al Roker on WX, Bob Gods(sp?), Lee Gelette Middays, Joe Bohannon Afternoon Drive(back then 15th & Chester across from the bus station)(Joe Bohannon still sounding stellar on B-96 in Chicago now mornings), Rick(Eric)Kramer ... the Bagman "on GCL" evenings for a while...Jim King & Chico the Wonder Dog Morning Drive, '81...Brandy "Buns" Kellog Overnights into Monday Morning after Uncle Vic Sunday Nights...Bob Travis & Tom Jeffreys+Dave Baron, WGCL SKYYYYY PILOT!!! What was the name of the t.v show Travis had? Top 40 music Top 10 video(?) show...Beau Coup Jingles that ran on GCL...Max Heywood(ended up on QAL & WLTF(?) took over Evenings, Dancin' Danny Wright took over Afternoon Drive 83-84ish...Phil Gardner had a weekend airshift Saturday & had all the character voices following him to Saturday mid-mornings...Travis was P.D & Jeffreys did a mean "Yolanda Williams" & " Reverend Strangely Ernest"...& Yoko Ono impression. Please add your best old G-98 memory here just to be hokey. Any Clevelanders remember seeing the old "Jim King & Chico the Wonder Dog billboards around town?

hey cARLOS,

We just had that discussion over at Cleveland.com Listening Party a few weeks back. A few of the personalities from that time including Bob Gott and Danny Wright(who is a regular over there) gave us some good memories.

Oh God No...not that craphole known as Cleveland.com Listening Party.

Back to G98...I remember this stunt they were doing back in the 70's (and I can not remember for the life of me what it was about...maybe a format change), where they would play a song, and stop it in the middle (yes, with the effect of the turntable stopping). Everytime I hear Kansas "Carry On Wayward Son" to this date, I can still remember when G98 stopped it during the song.

When our station went all c.ds(!) I rescued a WGCL BOOGIE BIGGIES Album from getting taken away in the trunk of an intern's car. A double album set w/ some cool pics of some old jocks! 8)

I ironically have airchecks from them with two DJ's Scott Wheeler and Commander Dave Kelly with those unforgettable jingles. Also have some airchecks from the old close of the Buzzard Morning Zoo as well with the late great Boom closing out the show and all the great cackling they did back then. Remember in the mid to late 80's when WMMS was head to head with G 98 when both were Top 40 and Boom used to close out the Zoo saying, "Kim, you need to lead your chickens to...." with some sort of rhyme? Kim was some guy with the name of Kim Colebrook or something the GM of G98 and what this was was a dig to the competition which at the time, was G98. Many never knew what the "Kim" was that he was saying. I read this somewhere.

So with that said, I came to save the day and have these airchecks here of the old G98:

http://www.twango.com/media.aspx?channelname=freed1.mymedia&media=freed1.10001

Old Cardinal Bank commercial in there too if you listen closely.

If you have a problem where it asks for user name or password, any of you let me know and will give that you. I am trying to not sign out of that site and do not know if it automatically lets you stayed signed in or not. I will post old airchecks I have here of WMMS and the Buzzard Morning Zoo forthcoming as well.

Freed, please hook me up! Couldn't sign in but wanna hear those airchecks! I taped the entire morning when WMMS stuffed the ballot box when they were "voted America's best" & got busted. Captain Kenny Clean is one you don't ever hear much about either, with his "Neater Soul Meter" Anyway, back to 98, I've got a few of the later airchecks of Commander Dave Kelley, Rick Kramer,Jim Dee & lots of old Uncle Vic shows in their entirety(w/ songs edited down). Also have the cristening in of the new studios with Joe Bohannon & a bunch of partiers in the studio, 1984 & they're all chugging champagne on the air & he's talking about how cool the slide pots are. Recall Friday Night Videos simulcasting their audio on GCL? I've also got a few snippets of Lee Gelette.

My other link for this site is:

Where I have posted five or so other airchecks as well.
Also posted at my other post.
Also same user name and password. All of this should work.
Please let me know what you think of the Zoo
airchecks as well as all of the other northeast Ohio
ones as well.

Newscaster Diane Burr did the "Morning Magazine" feature with the G-Team. I wonder how many closets around Cleveland have goldmines like old Uncle Vic shows :). I have quite a few, with a lot of his "Wackos"that would call in or co-host the show, long before he bought his night club plus he'd take them along with the "G-98 Dance Machine" when he'd d.j school dances...Howard Belcher, Ronald Reagan, Dr. Loose Westheimer, Echo Man, the Pubescent, the Yodeler, Max the Union Man & others. Not to get off the G-98 subject here, but WLTF did a late Sunday night show called "New Age Cleveland". I'm trying to remember who hosted it.

I remember as a very young kid a remote that G-98 was doing at our local swimming pool, Fell Lake Park in Northfield/Sagamore Hills. Danny Wright (and some other folks I don't remember unfortunately) drove the van up into the parking area and were rushed, as they were handing out various promo 45's. I think I still have some awful Survivor record from that day.

At any rate, I very innocently asked Danny "Where's Mama Love?", to which he replied something to the effect of "Well, she didn't think she'd fit in to well in this crowd so she decided to stay back"...I think I had to ask my parents later what that meant exactly, but in retrospect I have Danny Wright to thank for my first lesson in the painful reality that some folks might not be welcome in the cozier suburban neighborhoods. :p

Mother Love was on in the mornings w/ J. Michael Wilson after it turned into "The All New G-98" when Jim Ambresia owned them. Any word on if Mike Wilson is doing anything anymore(with his little friend "Rodney")? Also, Is Phil Gardner working at a religous station in Alaska now?

Re: J. Michael Wilson

Last I heard/saw, he was living hear Olmsted Falls. His website is down, right now, so here's what I could find of recent vintage.

Now: J. Mike resides near Cleveland, Ohio. He says (12/02), "I am a professional cyclist. No money, but much fun and fitness. Won four medals in the Ohio Senior Olympics in summer 2002. I qualified for National Senior Olympics in Virginia in May 2003. Recent photo at keener13.com." Click for more on J. Michael Wilson.

J .Michael Wilson: A Keener Urban Legend Debunked
Nobody knows how it started, but the story that Keener ace J. Michael Wilson was a heart transplant recipient has been officially debunked... by himself. Writing to Keener13.com, the creator of Rodney, The Wonder Rodent tells us that not only is he in excellent health, but he's qualified for this May's Senior Olympics. As an elite cyclist, J. Mike won four medals in the Ohio Senior Games last summer. He tells keener13.com, "I did have a talent transplant in 1993, my body rejected it, have been in a state of decline since." Sounds like another myth to us. Track J. Michael memories at his website, and hear J. Mike on Keener in the air-check archive.

cARLOS!!! OMG! All of the time you and I worked together and we never talked about Uncle Philsy!!! He worked in Fort Wayne for a time before going to Alaska. I worked with him at WZRQ a CHR in the late 80's, he worked for either WOWO or WLYV back in the 70's. I've just been informed he is here in Fort Wayne at WBCL doing mornings with Jim Barron. http://wbcl.org/programs/RiseNShineMain.asp

Wow, I just now got this 4 months later! Does he still do his wacky bits on the religous station or is it the "reformed" Phil, minus Walter Bumbite, the Story Lady & I'd Rather Be Dan"...Man, those were the days!

Anyone remember Brandy "Buns" Kellog on G-98, late 70's/early 80's? She did the "WGCL Town Cryer". And when Rick Cramer still did the "Bagman"? Sometimes he's make a cameo appearance in the G-Team Morning Show. :D

Brandy Kellogg married WMMS and WMJI alum Denny Sanders.

Do you mean Eric Cramer? He's the Prod Director at WNCX. Been there since Christ was a Corporal

Yeah, Eric, but he went by Rick Kramer in the WGCL days. I've got a couple airchecks from around '87 or so with a spot at the end for Caesar the Wrestling Bear.

It was a spot for the bar "The Real Flash Gordons"...I think Uncle Vic doesn't own his night club in Elyria anymore, does he?

If the Elyria folks can chime in I think they will verify that his nightclub is still open around the corner from their stations.
