let's talk monitors

I've got a client who has me doing voicing AND production...my current monitors aren't cutting it..so what's everyone using??..any suggestions?? bear in mind I'm not made of money.

Realizing that ears and amps and systems and techniques are different, for precise monitoring, Aurasound makes the flattest, uncolored speakers, at a reasonable price. If you prefer color, though, Tannoy 600s have a distinct low end, a frothy high, and a delicate wallet for a compact near field mon. Try them with a mild cheddar or smoked gouda.

Your best investment might be in a switcher, where you can switch to different monitor experiences (cheap cue speakers, cheap big boys, and your main monitors, frigzample).

For many years I was using Event 20/20's, $300/pair. They're unpowered. I used an Alesis RS300 power amp with them in conjunction with a Lexicon Alpha USB interface (audio out)

Events are very flat. Used them at stations in Cleveland and Raleigh NC. Liked them so much I bought them.

RF from the Alesis became an issue with my recent Avalon M5 purchase. So, I just bought a pair of POWERED Yamaha HS 50M speakers. 70w per channel. Perfect for my spare bdrm studio. Less wires, no power amp. And you can EQ them if you wish. I leave them flat.

Retail is $250 per speaker. I got the pair off eBay, NEW in the box, for $350.

A little brighter than the Events, even when EQ'd flat. But overall I'm happy with them.

Sooooo.....needless to say I have a pair of Event 20/20's and an Alesis RS300 for sale :)

Monitor technology has gotten very good and very cheap. I would highly recommend active monitors. Here are my picks (price decending):

Genelec 8040A

Tannoy Reveal 6DA

Mackie HR624

Alesis M1Active 620

Event ALP5

Unless you have a room with high ceilings, I'd go with a 6 or 6.5 inch cone. If you have a very small room, go 5. If your room is huge, then go up to 8.

No joke: right now I'm using a pair of... oh, probably about 20-year-old Realistic speakers. And, no, they don't sound that great at all. In fact, if it weren't for the fact that I'm used to them, I'd say they sound like utter [expletive self-bleeped]! But that's the key: I am used to them and my headphones. The trick is to know your monitors, no matter what they are. If you know your monitors and how they sound playing any kind of audio imaginable, you can produce with them.

I kinda like the event ALP 6's, I've also listened to the M-Audio BX-4's but they kinda sounded "hyped" to me

A second for the Blue Sky monitors.

We put the Blue Sky 2.1 systems in two studios and are very happy with the clean reference sound we get.

Another really cheap pair that sounds really good are the Wharfdale powered near field monitors. We use them in the RV studio and they are quite good..and quite cheap.

Monitors boy are there choices. I went with DynAudio Air15's. But I need to do music production as well. The smaller Events are not a bad choice if you dont need to do any critical listening involving bass guitar or full size cello. Otherwise watch the low end response on anything smaller than an 8" woofer.

The bass tuned standard starts in 40 Hz area, so if your monitors start at 60hz your missing part of the music. If it's tuned down look out. Even expensive AKG headphones have given me a translate to user grade speaker issues on music content. So like you when buy a computer , it's not if it has the fastest new whatzit, does it do what you need? Does one half as expensive as that do it, or will you have to upgrade the minute you set it down.
