Letterman, Monday night?

I think it was Monday night's show. I didn't catch the whole show, just a few minutes of the monologue.

Dave had security standing on the stage behind him, and at one point, turned to him and asked, "So you'll shoot your gun if anyone charges towards me, right?" The crowd chuckled a bit given the phrasing of the question. And the guard, stonefaced, nodded his head.

It seemed more real than a gag.

Was he threatened?

Maybe it had something to do with the terrorist threats in NYC in recent days. Whether or not he's an actual guard or an actor (or both) is anyone's guess.

If it was real, theres no need to put him on camera. He'd be just as effective off camera.

I recall hearing something recently that his young son had been threatened...

A man who worked for Letterman at his Montana ranch was plotting to kidnap Dave's son and nanny and hold them ransom. I don't remember what ended up happening in that case.

I'm sure the bit Monday night was just a gag in response to the terrorist threat against NYC last weekend.

Given Daves heartfelt responses toward NYC and their recovery from the 9/11 attacks, I don't think he'd be using terrorism as a gag....It might have been something going on in elsewhere in or nearby the building during the taping.

The man responsible was sentenced to a 10-year prison term as a result of a plea deal. The sentence was handed down...this past Monday.
