This would have been my choice to place L&T.

Is there no active rocker or alt rocker in Ocala?

Nothing! Ocala has WTRS Country; WOGK Country; WNDD Classic Rock; WMFQ Classic Hits; WKTK Adult Contemporary; and, WSKY News-Talk. That's it on the local FM band.

so which station sounds better? 92.9 in Ocala or 105.9 in Orlando (Deland). 92.9 used to have a great stick, now it's lame.....what happened?

Sunny brags about having the "largest terrestrial radio signal in Florida".....lovely

That's probably true. Along the east coast, it's on the car radio from Jacksonville to Vero Beach. Along I-75, it reaches almost to Lake City. Before 105.9/Englewood went on, it was an easy catch in most of Tampa Bay.

Nice to hear. Bummer to see so many great Class C frequencies get "down sized". Is it still HAAT that drives the signal or more about wattage? Can a 1200 foot tower at 50k have a broader reach than a 500 foot tower at 100k?

WMFQ 92.9 was never a downgrade. It was an upgrade to a C2 from a class A. Originally WMFQ operated on 92.7 A. It was upgraded to a 50kw C2 on 92.9 in 1989.

so why is the signal so crappy now?

WMFQ's tower is in Santos, near Belleview, which is approximately 11-miles South of Ocala. This site was chosen to avoid a short-spacing conflict with co-channel WAAC-FM 92.9 C1 Valdosta, Georgia. Tell me where you are attempting to receive 92.9 now and I should be able to give you a more definitive answer as to why you are experiencing signal challenges.

Starke, Gainesville area. Why is it that Valdosta, GA gets the big stick and Gainesville/Ocala gets the shaft here?

In FM, it's height first and power second. Each does have an effect, but (generally speaking, of course) power is far less important than height. Reducing the power by 50% only cuts the stations range by about 15%. That's why it is silly to see some station get in trouble witht he FCC for running 120% power when it only buys them an extra 3 or 4%. So, in the question above, the 50k at 1200' will have a bigger footprint.

Thanks. Any idea who has the tallest tower in Florida? My guess is the WOCL/Sunny 105.9 in Deland (Orlando) has a tall stick.

Stations were originally authorized based on the market sizes. Later stations were bought, sold and moved around more freely. It's not that Valdosta necessarily got a better deal because someone favored them. Gainesville has a lot of trouble fitting in big stations because we're too close to Orlando, Tampa or Jacksonville. We only get the leftover channels and the power channels went to the cities with much bigger populations at the time.

So some station in Miami or Tampa has the strongest signal? I still think WOCL is up there.

I think that's a shared panel antenna with WOCL, WJHM and WMGF. It's either on or near the WESH-TV tower at Orange City. The antenna is about 1,550 feet up, which is about 3/4 of the way to the maximum allowed. In Florida, there are several taller towers including WCIX-TV in Miami at nearly 2,000' and one up in the panhandle around Dothan, AL.

Are there radio stations on these "shared" towers? Wouldn't it be cool to put like a great rocker on a 2000' tower in the middle of the state?

Stations are granted by class. If you have a class C, you can have a maximum antenna height of 600 meters. C0 is 450 meters, C1 is 299 meters, C2 is 150 metrs and C3 is 100 meters. If you get a class C0, but choose to only build to 301meters to save money, that's your decision. You may not have the strongest signal, but if you're happy, then the FCC is happy. On the other hand, if you choose to maximize the station by going to 450 meters, that's fine witht eh FCC, too.
