Leykis caller says Bernie Ward killed himself?

A SF caller to Leykis' show today said that, despite Tom's discussion of KGO hosts he goes up against, namely Bernie Ward [albeit it an hour], that Bernie committed suicide.

"When", he asks? "About four years ago." Huh?!? Tom actually went along with it, including a softened tone of voice coming back from a break, reminiscing about Bernie and offering condolences. He went on and on about it. Unless it's 2:47AM and something is hazy in my mind, Bernie was on the air as recently as two hours ago. Unless there was another Bernie Ward on KGO. :)

Word is that Infinity is going to switch 106.9 to CHR when it takes over the station in October, and they will hire The Doghouse for mornings.<P ID="signature">______________

Wow, Bernie is gonna be shocked to hear he's dead !
Because there's a guy who looks and sounds just like Bernie at KGO...
Perhaps this misguided caller was refering to the Late Duane
Garrett, who did kill himself, and did work for KGO in the
evenings...But that was on July 26, 1995. And he did work 7-10pm.

My, what well informed callers 106.9 has. As for Lykis, he's on against
Gene Burns on KGO. I don't think Tom's Listeners and Gene share many
listeners, since Gene tends to talk to Grownups, and Tom talks to Uhhhhhh.

Since Gene is boring and over with. Cut your losses at RKO and save yourself from talking to the 65-death crowd. Leykis' LA audience is among the most affluent in the market.

Bernie was on at 1AM we he signed off. KIFR or whatever must have strange callers!

RKO? RK-freaking-O?

RKO has been out of the radio business since 1991. You want to mull this one over for a few hours and say what you really meant?

Now this is an unintelligent thing to say. Why do people assume because someone's shtick is like Leykis' that they talk to "uhhhh." It's a Talk station for younger adults. "Grownups" is a very "non-grownup" word. They both talk to ADULTS! Different demo in the Adult world with different psychographics, but adults nonetheless. They are both doing their thing successfully and making their owners money!

Do I listen to Tom Leykis? Haven't in a few years. Do I listen to Stern? Never have? Do I listen to Gene? Once every 6 months I may have tuned in when I listened to KGO... They are all successful people. Just because a host doesn't talk to 55+ demo doesn't mean they talk to "uhhhhh" - which is obvious you were trying to imply (I said IMPLY, I didn't say you actually said this... I know how RI peeps like to jump to conclusions) "imature, non-affluent listeners." Think again.

JUST MY OPINION!

You got that right. Unfortunately there is no RKO anymore. That was a GREAT radio company. We don't have anything like that anymore.

Well then I'm sure you will allow me to have my opinion too.
I will tell you that as a listener, when I heard Leykis respond to a female caller,(who had not just come from a mensa meeting)who took exception
with something Tom had said putting down women, as he does constantly,
his response to her Was..."Lets Give YOU the Lacie Peterson Honey"
We then heard a trap door open (SFX) and a Body hit the water"

That's when I formed my current opinion of him. Now,I realize I may have
missed the heady Hi Brow Humor there But in "My Opionion" I did not find it funny...Or the caller very Bright.

But then, as I recall, this thread started when one of Tom's callers
from the B Area called to report to Tom that KGO's Bernie Ward,
Had killed himself. "Someone from the Bay Area" Who doesn't know
very much about the news.

Perhaps It was just My bad luck and Tom's to hit 2 rather "uninformed" young adults. Maybe you should give Tom's Show a listen, you may change your opinion.

Thank You DJ...

KJCB Must be another one of Tom's Well Informed "Young" Listeners.
:)

That's what makes the show interesting IMO. If I want to hear political talk from intellectuals, I will, and I do. But it's entertaining to hear a bunch of morons calling in with weak arguments.

WRKO. You know, Gene's old gig where he did 10a-2pm. You may be trying to find error in everything I post, but please find something a little more reasonable to do so with.

If you meant "WRKO," then write WRKO. This is a San Francisco board. Know your audience. "RKO" was an ownership group. It owned stations in this market. You made reference to "RKO," not "WRKO." They are different entities.

And if you don't want me to pick on your mistakes, stop making so many of them. Or do you want to try one more time to explain your reference to East Coast Hockey League teams in Bakersfield and Fresno and how they pertain to Bay Area radio?

So many... all of two.

Sports teams that buy time frequently do so in neighboring same-state markets. If I had a station that didn't care much about listenership, like KYCY, I would be soliciting such teams (used as an example only) to purchase time on my station. Just as we solicited a Flagstaff team buy clearances in Phoenix and Tucson. Whether you like it or not, they bought time at a prime rate to create their network and sell statewide spots. All the ECHL teams I've seen or heard about are paying a prime rate, hence my use of them for my example. Is that acceptable?

No, Duane Garrett/KGO

Duane Garrett of KGO n/t 810 jumped the bridge in 1995. It was a very sad loss in the broadcast industry.

Exactly. For what Tom is trying to accomplish, and making money for his execs. he's doing just fine.

I won't listen to Leykis because I'm not into his show anymore. Sure, maybe I've "matured." Whatever. I can still appreciate Tom for his ability and for what he does. He creates radio that MOST people won't admit they listen to, but he's doing just fine... they are listening. I've programmed a station in which I carried Leykis, and he did great for us. Brought us bigger #'s than our local guy was before him. Numbers = Sales! Bring it!

RKO: Programming and revenue-wise they were top-notch, but the upper management there were a corrupt bunch, and that's a major reason there's no RKO anymore.

sad, but was result of being caught scamming people with fake sports merchandise, people got taken big...

Correct. Duane Garrett was only days or weeks away from huge personal humiliation and a whole lot of legal trouble - criminal and civil. One can only speculate why he ended his life, but I've always assumed that he couldn't face what was coming. From what I read at the time, his job at KGO was what he truly loved most. But I'm sure Luckoff would have suspended or fired him when the crap hit the fan.
