Leykis Lashes Out over his Lacking in Streaming Talk Radio Rankings

No one listens to Tom rant anymore. When he was syndicated all he could talk about was how he did in the LA ratings. Maybe he's always been insecure but he's never gotten over getting the boot at KFI for Darrell Gates.

I love Leykis and religiously listened to him when he was on terrestrial radio, but this podcasting thing just isn't my cup of tea and I don't suspect it ever will catch on despite how many years Carolla turned blue in the face trying to convince us that it will. I guarantee you that any one of them would give their right arm to get a regular radio gig back. Savage grabbed the terrestrial gig when offered. Heidi and Frank sound so much relaxed now that they have a regular job.

That's where you're wrong. Carolla turned down a Sirius radio show a year ago.
He was offered a show more than a year ago. It was 09-10. He said the offer was insulting and was many times below what terrestrial radio would pay.

Stern wanted Adam to do a show on his 'howard 101' channel a few years ago.

Besides the major talents they don't pay anything to anyone over there. Particularly on Howard 101. Riley Martin used to complain all the time that he used to fill a few hours of air time and basically get enough to cover a hair cut or two. I bet he was pretty close to what they paid over there.

Oh I see, now we're moving the goalposts to "well-paying radio gig".

...Martin was (is?) being paid $400 for one hour per week. $400-per-hour is pretty damned nice, if you ask me ;D ...

Riley Martin's a lunatic anyway. A better example would be Sam Roberts from Opie and Anthony, who practically lives in the SiriusXM studios and hardly gets paid.

I was very happy with the rate Sirius paid me to track. Many multiples more than a CC tracking gig. Many.

...it's worth remembering that, ten years ago (long before Leykis was cut loose by CBS), Sirius had Mike Church doing a mega-Chauvinist act that Church openly admitted was a near cloning of Leykis' 101 bit; it flopped horribly, and now Church does a lot more Conservitalk on his show than he did then. Plus, Leykis has been pointedly vocal in refusing to take any pay cut simply to pad some executive's golden parachute, which is what he considers the terrestrial radio offers he's been getting to be. The only way I can forsee Tom doing any chatting on SiriusXM at this point is if they pick up The Tasting Room for one of their Stars channels...

Since Stern left terrestrial radio Carolla was offered two terrestrial gigs and a Sirius rebroadcast of his podcast.

First, he was offered the Stern seat based in NYC so he could do drive time and get on most of the Stern FM affiliates. He was not so keen on the move, the offerees got cold feet and many of the affiliate markets decided to try a regional talent strategy. Carollla continued on at the LA based 97.1 FM and may have kept a few regional affiliates. Interestingly, Carrolla was nearing the end of his contract but Leykis still had a 2 or 3 years left and got paid to stay off radio. Frank Kramer (heidi and frank) claimed if Leykis took a pay cut 97.1 would have survived. Also, Leykisregent was Stern's agent.

Quite some time after FM talk imploded and Carrolla started his podcast he was approached by what I believe he said was Sony to start a national radio program. He had the signed contact in his hand but turned it down.

At some point he was offered the Sirius rebroadcast of his podcast but it never happened. I suspect it was the typical no pay deal hot talk channel.

I believe that Frank Kramer was full of it on the Leykis pay cut claim. At least that's what I heard.

Kramer quickly took back the Leykis allegation. I would not be suprised if a Kramer was contacted by Leykis legal representation. I'm sure Brian Steckman has more than a few copies of a cease and desist letters. It was great radio when Steckman would do his spot on impersonations of Leykis - particularly when he and Leykis would be in the same room during a KLOS jock "roundtable".

...97.1 was KLSX, never KLOS. And it was Brian Whitman, not "Brian Steckman" (whoever that was) or Doug Steckler (who you're probably thinking of) who did the Fake Leykis schtick on Timmy's KLSX shows and the KLSX Roundtable sessions...

It was Brian Whitman who did the spot on Leykis impression. I've always though the guy was extremely talented but his personal demons always stalled his career. His Al Rantel and Rick Dees were also simply perfect.

He did appear on Wayne Resnik's show last year and did the same impression but he wasn't called Tom Leykis. The name was something very similar but not Tom Leykis since he mentioned he had gotten lots of cease and desist letters.

He would also do the Leykis that was losing his voice. That was hilarious.
