LEYKIS SERVES WHITMAN

D

LARADIO.com reports that Leykis served BDW with a C&D over the Fake Leykis podcasts (which are brilliant and available at fakeleykispodcast.com or through itunes). Leykis also wants an accounting of donations to Whitman. This, to me, is an unbelievably petty move on behalf of the professor.

Not really, this is basically unauthorized use of intellectual property. It would be the same if someone recreated Howard Stern or the classic Phil Hendrie bits and then put them up for "donations". Those radio personas are the creations of the parties who made them famous and are therefore subject to the laws protecting intellectual property.

Baloney, Norman. "Intellectual Property"?? How is this different from any impressionist doing a well known character? Speaking of Phil Hendrie, how about his "CombOver Boy" Leykis impressions?

The Professor is really blowing some hot air. Over the years he had become a caraciture of himself and Brian Whitman has TL down cold. Just hilarious. Leykis should be kissing Whitman's butt for keeping the 'brand' alive. "Marks" indeed. Meanwhile Leykis is sitting on the beach or in his mansion up near NeverLand cashing some big big checks (during the next year or so) from CBS for doing absolutely nothing but eating lamb and drinking Merlot..

Clearly, BDW was NOT trying to mislead anyone, as he clearly labeled the podcast "FAKE Leykis" to distinguish it from the REAL Leykis. I believe this is constitutionally-protected free speech and, if this is illegal, Frank Caliendo should have his @$$ sued off!

I am not a Leykis fan, however I do recall some past incidents where "impressionists" were enjoined under specific circumstances. In the end this will be a matter for the highly paid legal beagles to iron out, if it goes further. Maybe we should call into "Handel On The Law" for a definitive answer. ;D ::)

I love Tom Leykis but he just has to let this one go. Kevin and Bean spoof the guy all the time. I'm sure no one even donated anything because there's only been 2 episodes!

I agree.

I'm sure Leykis would like a percentage of that Google AdSense money, as well. That would have to be where the money-- if much at all-- would be coming in.

KLL,

I agree 100% After he gets that royalty.. He needs to buy 550 in Phoenix.

Hello Beave!

Interesting. Why would he want to buy 550 from Clear Channel? Think of that huge price-tag for the Valley's #1 station! I know he was once on 550, but still...

Building a nest for a rainy day... ratings are good... things are on the cheap.

...the podcast is gone as of at least 5:51 this afternoon (31st of July)...

...having listened to the two that Brian did put up before the C&D, I have to side with Tom's old complaint about "Evil Leykis" (as he was ID'd on Carolla's show) on this one. Brian's mimicry is damned good, but the material he uses to perform it is lamer than an old Jimmy Fiddler script from the '40s...

Jimmie Fidler! Whoa now that's a reference that only people of a certain age and era would know. I haven't heard Jimmie Fidler on the radio since the mid 70's and I was a kid then. He was born in 1900 for God's sake and he died 21 years ago. Great reference!

As for BW material, it could be better, but his impression is so dead on that it's still great.

...merci ;-) ...for whatever it's worth, I lifted that reference from Henry Morgan's first half-hour ABC show in 1946 ;D (Morgan and Fiddler both jumped between Mutual and ABC in the mid-'40s)...
