LF Keeping Atlanta Cluster...For Now

Guest
Lincoln Financial sold its Charlotte cluster to Greater Media but isn't selling any more radio stations for now. Affect on Q100? None.

Key word there is "For Now" The 3 TV markets + sports network were sold to Raycom. What is left with this division is radio in Atlanta Denver San Diego & Miami. Didn't get the price they think they deserve. The morning show uncertainity of Denver & Atlanta readjust value. Lots of stations are on the market. This is like selling a home, it's all timing.

According to an earlier thread, Cumulus had the deal done ???

From what I heard they never even came to the table.

They were talking a good game, and there lies the problem they talked a good game.

I think was nothing more than them putting out disinformation!

Not a bad way to upset the apple cart!

Since Lincoln Financial is apparently happy to sell off individual markets, you have to think Cumulus Media Partners does have a chance at Atlanta, especially since they seem so motivated to pick up Star 94. The only other possibilities for Atlanta are CBS and Citadel. Of course, maybe Joe Weber will buy Star and move his bird calls to 94.1.

I would hope someone like Entercom or Beasley would want to try to make a go at Atlanta. There's too much consolidation and too few owners in this market.

What's the chance Clear Channel or Cox could make a bid at the LF properties?

Just think, if Clear Channel ended up with Star 94, they can sue Cox for using the "Kiss" moniker in Atlanta, flip Star 94 to "94.1 Kiss FM", use the same Clear Channel playlist as other winning Clear Channel CHR properties, carry Ryan Seacrest in the morning, and voicetrack the other dayparts as well!

As the "New 94.1 Kiss FM" the former Star 94 will be catapaulted to new levels of success now currently enjoyed by other hot CC Atlanta properties like 640GST.

lol

They're WAAAYYY over-leveraged & taking a financial bath over the Susquehana deal. I can't see who would broker such a deal for them in their current financial condition.

Greater Media will be the best thing to ever happen to Charlotte Radio. I wouldnt be surprised to see them pick up another stick or two down the road from bigger companies who will eventually pare down.

Cumulus still wants Atlanta, it just hasnt found anything worth while that will make Lincoln Financial happy. Linc wants upwards to 80 million for that property, if not more.

Linc will sell Miami, San Diego, Denver all soon. Bonneville has been to the table and has presented great things (from what I hear), so when and where are still in question, but look for Linc to get a little smaller and Bonne to get a little bigger.

That's always been my though too. Along with them wanting to go private. Although one cluster is easier to stomach than the whole radio division.

Good read from Tom Taylor.....

Look who ultimately didn’t come to the party for Lincoln Financial – Cumulus and Bonneville.

Bad timing for Cumulus: One dealmaker says “this is an indication of how much Lew Dickey’s hands are tied during this go-private phase – he couldn’t get the one station in America he craves more than any other.” Meaning Atlanta’s Star 94, WSTR.

Did I hear someone call me a liar!

As I said before be very careful of dis-information!

80 million? For Star94?? You've got to be kidding Kentucky.....
Star94 will be go in the 175-225 MILLION range.....not a penny less!
Remember-this is beachfront property....in Atlanta! Total radio ad spending around $400 MILLION yearly. Only a few markets with higher radio ad spending....count 'em on one hand.
And Star gets it's share of the pie.
Cash flow 12-18 million?? Billing 25-30 million?
Multiples of 10-12??
Do the math.

You are so right, Tom. Consider that in 2000, Cox bought 104.7 for $280 million (and then traded it to Salem for a Houston station). Cox waaaaay overpaid and values have declined, but Star 94 will certainly fetch close to $200 million.
