What is truly a shame is that when WUHF started it's 10:00 news years ago it was actually a decent product with a group of dedicated professionals headed up by then news director Donna Dedee. Then came along the cheapola owners and their budget-cutting, bottom-line, I don't know sh** about broadcasting consultants and management who scraped a good news product and gave us that god-awful News Central and a group of local graduates from the Ted Baxter School of Broadcasting.
I was somewhat encouraged when Channel 8 took over 31's news operation because, at the time, 8 had a news staff that had some creditability. But since then a number of those veteran reporters who made 8 a competitive operation have since left; either on their own or shown the front door. There should be a sign posted on the front door at 201 Humboldt Street. "Experience Doesn't Count."
Now 31's news is nothing but a preview of what Channel 8 is going to feature at their 11pm newscast with an anchor who obviously got the job not for her reporting or anchoring skills but because she looks good on TV.
As I said in an earlier post, this is the future of TV news. And then broadcasting executives wonder why their viewing audience is shrinking each year.

But on the other hand I'm not sorry when I say that there are too many "good" newscasters out there looking for jobs and can't get them because stations feel the need to fill quotas. I hate quotas! Hire the most professional person you can, even if that means having to pay them a decent salary. Physical beauty or handsome good looks should not be a main consideration for hiring someone.
The concept of hiring someone with little of no experience to save a buck in reality isn't saving a station anything. By the time a "newbie" is trained they are most likely ready to move on to another market, thus the station has to undergo the interview process all over again. So tell me where they are saving any money? Does anyone truly believe that Lia Lando plans to stay in Rochester for the rest of her broadcasting career? Of course not. If she's got any smarts she's already sent out tapes and resumes to larger markets.
I don't want this to sound like the typical "back in the good old days" speech but when I was a news director I made sure that I started my employees at a higher salary than any other station in town was paying. Why? So I could attract the best people and keep them for a longer period of time. And you know what? It worked. And I didn't have to worry about filling any damn quotas either. Ironic enough two of the people I hired went on to work in television news as both reporters and later anchors; Donna Dedee and Robin DeWind. I didn't hire them because they are women; I hired them because they were the best people for the job...period.

WROC taking over WUHF backfired on them, i think. They were expecting rave reviews and new viewers, well it looks like they have the complete oppisite. The newsacast was good early on, only because it was something other than News Central. But when i try and watch it every night i get bored. When i first heard that WROC was going to produce a newscast, I thought GREAT! You know i figured they would have two anchors and a REAL SET.
Well instead we get a blond haired lady that is doing the news, then we get some weather, then 2 minutes of sports. Then its goodnight. If WROC was smart they would make the set have an actual desk with two reporters and segments that are different than the ones to be seen on NEWS 8 NOW at 11:00. But has WROC ever listened to viewers critisim before? NO! Because the top staff at WROC doesnt give a damn, as long as they can still be on the air they are happy.

If I offended you, I apologize. Of course there are dedicated people who tried their best to make 31’s local news work but didn't get the support staff or commitment from the front office that they needed to succeed.
On the other hand I must be honest with you when I say that there are currently people on Rochester TV that have absolutely no business being on television. They can not write news worth a damn, let alone deliver it. And the only reason some of these people have jobs is because they are "eye candy" for the viewers. Anyone who truly cares about "real" news is interested in the story and not whether the person reading the teleprompter looks like some actor or actress from a soap opera, as another poster puts it.
Everyone makes mistakes, and God knows I made many of them on-air. But at least I knew the market and pre-read my scripts before opening the microphone. If there was a name I didn't know how to pronounce, I would ask for assistance. And when I did live reports, like Election night coverage, I did my homework and read up on the candidates and the issues. When I hear a reporter asking a candidate "how does it feel to win"? I want to take that reporter and strangle them with their mic cord.
The news business has turned from informing people to entertaining them.

Don't sell yourself short. I'll put my low rent Buff Sate degree up against a Syracuse one any day. While being a member of the "Newhouse" click may open some doors, it's still really mostly about who has talent and who doesn't,...and they can't teach you that in college.
Believe me, this hardscrabble Elmwood Ave. Alum has kicked plenty of Syracuse ass in his day.

I've never been impressed by SU grads. The ones I've worked with can't write to save their lives. Nothing special. I have often wondered how they earned their degrees. Ithaca grads much better - and I'm not an IC grad.

I don't think she's going anywhere anytime soon. Her hubby is an assistant prosecutor in the federal office here.
