Lib Talk is a RETARDED format...

Why should Conservatives take issue with that? After all they are pro free enterprise and anti government intervention. (And I won't even get into many of the show hosts' personal use of legal or illegal mind-altering substances).

My take on progtalk...

XXX RANT ALERT XXX

The new progtalk 1350 is what it is. A perfect complement to WHLO, whose hosts are on the opposite side of the political spectrum. Can't this be seen as a perfect way to cut deeply into WNIR - with two stations doing the job?

That being said, I resent people dubbing hosts as "the liberal Rush," replete with TONS of nationwide press. Why? All it does is set someone up to fail based on inflated expectations. Al Sharpton's the latest victim of this trend. Heck, Al may be a real kick to listen to - I just don't want to hear this "liberal Rush" stuff. What does that say for everyone on AAR? Or Lionel, Steph and Ed?

I feel AAR, as well as Hannity, Phil Hendrie should enter the market. Let the public decide. Cleveland radio is greatly underserved in this regard, thank God for Akron's existence ;)

As for "retarded" - I gladly support the Special Olympics Sectional Basketball Tournament at LCCC every year in late Feburary. It's a very worthwhile event. So be very careful with your euphamisms, buddy.

That's why I'm going for broke on calling it "progtalk" - it fits the format better. And I hope most take my lead...

Amen, Amen, Amen. I know we're supposed to keep it apolitical, but the fact is that "serious" political talk has to be a mix of entertainment and facts. Otherwise it becomes mis-information or dis-information. We live in a democracy and I personally believe that broadcasters (who, let's not forget, have a responsibility to serve the public good) have to be very careful not to let themselves be used as propoganda machines by any party, unless it is clear that they are serving and paid for by a special interest (as in Ed "Flash" Ference's excellent Labor Radio program on WERE.)

I too loved Sam Donaldson's show because he was truly out for facts...and I usually found him entertaining but...

Beck is good because he doesn't try to project the image of much more than an entertainer. Rush is maddening because he tries to project an air of accuracy. The left-wingers haven't been on in this market long enough to develop a good opinion of them, though I was listening to Schultz bash Dean this morning and I concur...you'd never hear Rush or Hannity (rhymes with insanity) doing the same. Dennis Prager impresses me as someone who has integrity, but I fear most find him b-o-r-i-n-g.

While we're on the subject...someone else already brought it up, but 1350 really should can the "we're not owned by suits" promo.

I think Mitch Albom is very good. Though he isn't strictly political talk, and his show is guest-driven, he is not about selling kool-aid, either red or blue.

Finally...I wouldn't listen to talk radio nearly as much if we had a decent music station in Cleveland!

Happy weekend all.

That's odd because that's precisely how I feel about conservative talkers.
And they say the two sides have nothing in common.

Humor and Talk Radio

> Agree; Franken has very dry humor....

Agreed.

Those who can pull it off on the left: Randi Rhodes (most of the time). Stephanie Miller (it's her main claim to fame, the humor). I "get" Franken's humor, but it's not enough to make me really even chuckle. When it comes to interviews, that's his bag, and his humor isn't really even of the SNL variety, where he gained his comedic chops...it's not translating well to a live radio show. Entertainment-keep-listeners-listening-wise, Stephanie blows him off the dial with her proverbial hands tied behind her back.

On the right, Glenn Beck is about the only host who could fit under the "entertaining issues talk" banner. I heard him recently when he was, with the help of his wife on the phone, going over the contents of his iPod, to prove that you couldn't tell what kind of person someone (in this case, President Bush) was by dorky music on his iPod. It was actually very, very funny. (Glenn's got two or three showtunes categories he spent most of the hour explaining. :D)

Rush's humor is more, well, RUSH...it's just one part of his repetoire. It's more "atmosphere" with him than cracking jokes. He basically brought humor into the format, but he's become the standard-bearer for conservative talk radio, and he's mellowed that humor over the years.

Hannity does it occasionally, mostly when he does stuff like involving his producer "Flipper", or when he sends her or someone on the street to do the Jay Leno-ish interviews of stupid people.

What are you smoking?... the term "Lib" has been around since before Rush was even old enough to pop zits!!! Next thing you'll be telling me, Rush invented the internet.

The national show, I'd agree. The local show is somewhat a different matter. Way before there was "conservative talk radio" being thought of as a format, Mike McConnell was doing middays. He went from liberal to conservative to libertarian (but not doctrinaire) over the years. I don't know that he pulls his punches for the p1's, or if the p1's are as conservative as WKRC's would be.<P ID="signature">______________
