Liberal talk shows up in Fort Myers book

... and it's not a Fort Myers station, it's Miami's WINZ. All the more surprising since Miami AM's don't have a history of showing up in the Fort Myers ratings in recent years.

Does this indicate a possible audience for liberal talk on a local signal in SW Florida?

The history of liberal talk in the Fort Myers - Naples region in recent years has mainly been the story of Guy James getting kicked from station to station and finally off the air.

Would there be any viable signals available for a progressive talk format in SWFL?

As someone who lives in the market, it is a yawn.

WINK/WNOG is the only news/talker that covers the entire market and look at their ratings. People in SWFLA love talk radio....remember even Guy James had a steady listenership even though he kept bouncing around WINK Radio due to the Gators and other programs.

Liberal talk radio, conservative talk radio, NPR...they are all going to pull listeners in SWFLA.

BTW, Clear Channel owns no Fort Myers or Naples AM stations and only owns WCCF as a news/talker in their Punta Gorda cluster.

Whether it's Ft Myers , the Keys or West Palm, "liberal talk" (aka WINZ) will show up ..or down...depending on diary placement. While WINZ has been pretty steady in it home market (not spectacular but certainly better than the previous couple of formats on this signal), it's still a relatively small cume station...magnified in the smaller outlying markets...which explains a BIG jump for WINZ in the WEst Palm fall book but likely a drop back in the winter...same thing for Ft Myers. What's interesting is that after years of WINZ being a no-show in WEst Palm, it fairly consistently beats a number of Miami signals (WQAM, which had been a player, comes to mind). Bottom line, CC ain't going to kill "liberal talk" in markets where it makes sense. However, I think there is still question on whether or not there will be advertising support.

I recall WINZ showing up in the Ft. Myers book on several occasions, both as a prog talker, and in it's previous sports incarnation. Puts a fine daytime signal into SW Fla, esp. Naples.
