Libtalk back in Phoenix

Not a big surprise, but did they buy the station or is it an LMA?

I'm almost positive the station is definitively not for sale, and since I don't see how they'd come up with $4 mil in five weeks, its an LMA.

This must be the "Save Air America Phoenix" group led by Dr. Mike Newcomb and his producer, and not Bob Christy's project.

It is the "Save Air America" group. The following is from Jeff Farias, Dr. Mike Newcomb's producer:

Friends,

I come bearing good news.

We are proud to announce that starting April 3rd Air America Phoenix will return to the airwaves.

Our new home is at 1480 AM KPHX.

We will be carrying all of your favorite Air America personalities plus Dr. Mike Newcomb in the morning.

Thanks to all of you who contributed to the effort. This has been a remarkable effort and perhaps the most intense three weeks of my life. In the end we were able to negoitiate a better deal than we were first offered to get us in the door. We are not out of the woods yet. We need to raise more funds to finish paying the lease. We will be continuing the pixel drive in hopes to offset some of the money we have had to borrow to get on the air.
Go to www.saveairamericaphoenix.com to contribute.

Thanks again and we look forward to talking with you on the air.

If they think they'll last even 6 months with this "business plan" (and I use that term very loosely), they're delusional. Begging won't do it. Selling advertising time will.

And if Bob Christy (who has Goyette and Schultz on board, which is why they won't be on KPHX) can buy or lease another station, Air America on 1480 is toast sooner than I'm guessing. At least he has a clue and a plan. Newcomb and his fellow whiners apparently don't. "Rich Democrat?" If Eddie Basha isn't ponying up some of his millions for this debacle **er-I mean** station, nobody will.

The market is overtalked and this idea from liberals nationally that "we need this for the midterms" is surreal; Christy is right on... it's not a bad on-air product and if it can make money, great. But there tends to be a coincidence that the ventures that make money are the ones with solid business rationale.

Apparently two or three former 1010 sales people are signed on for the KPHX venture. But as to the other KXXTers, namely Christy, starting their own station, are being a bit silly, as well. Seems he just wants to get into a pissing match with his former employees. Add to that the fact that there's nothing available - KIDR could be LMAed but the signal sucks, the folks at 1190 are still in their honeymoon phase and won't be receptive, the folks at KSUN could care less about money from all appearances, and 1540 isn't changing. The only option is a rimshot FM for $10+ million or outbidding Dr. Newcomb and Co. at KPHX; definitely a possibility, but why?

Re: Libtalk back in Phoenix - for now

i'm gonna miss the music of my life on 1480. ..no, really.

i think it should go on the fm.

also, sandusky's arizona gold would be great format on fm.

arizona gold 93three ! ..and shuffle the kdkb playlist over to kslx.

btw - why isn't air america on sandusky's 1060 ?

1060 as a sports station will be finished when 860 powers-up.

and speaking of sandusky 1440..

the other day i was riding by the lumber yard tower and noticed a couple engineers moving an stl antenna out of the shack.

are they preping 1440 for changes or just using the site for storage ?

Here's a thought -

After about 6 months, when the 1480 folks run out of money, Christy and company swoop in and take over on more favorable terms.

This sure has some parallels with the current state of the Democratic Party. The splinter groups just aren't getting along.

You've got Newcomb and company saying that the buyout of 1010 was purposely done to silence left-leaning talk radio from the Phoenix airwaves.

Then you've got Christy and Goyette who look at the sale as an offer Jim Hilliard couldn't refuse, and something they had no control over.

Which side sounds more rational?

It's very possible, but the owner of the station really has no need to do "more favorable terms". He could sell and get $4 million or so, but he won't. When Comedy stopped paying, he, AFAIK, didn't try to negotiate, he just kicked them out. When someone doesn't pay the bills, he puts on filler. As to Bob Christy, I have no doubt that if he brought in a bigger check every month, Dr. Newcomb and Co. would be the victims of a termination clause.

You're right, and I've said it plenty of times before, but I'll say it again: certain religious outfits, like Communicom, worship the God mentioned on a dollar bill. Most of these "religious" stations, like their co-owned WLNO/New Orleans, run plenty of snake oil infomercials. Why? Because to them money trumps faith, and if libtalk was rolling in dough, Al Franken would trump God, too.

But all else aside, the format is back. Will they return to its previous ratings on the new stick? If, like some suggest, "it'll be over in six months", what will the excuse be then?

"This new 'Music of Your Life' format is the result of Frank Sinatra's sinsister efforts to silence liberals from the grave."

Well, that's the "more favorable terms" part. :D

And Mr. Christy, assuming he's even still interested in mounting the libtalk horse again, would have a more commercially-friendly lineup, and would bring along the Jones talkers along with Mr. Goyette, presumably.

Again, assuming HE is still interested.

I agree. Christy would have a much more viable lineup with the Jones talkers (Schultz, Miller, Press) and Goyette than with the stuff that Air America offers. Has anyone actually listened to "Dead Air Theatre with Al Franken"? That s*** is painful! The only two shows that Air America offers that approach entertaining talk radio are Randi Rhodes and Rachael Maddow...

You mean WLNO, the station that was running infomercials up until the moment that Katrina hit? I guess someone needs to give KFNX a run for its money.

I like Air America, but I think that they need someone like Bob Christy at the helm if they're going to stay afloat. Christy gets the business.

On the other hand, for all the people who whine "What if we were to make donations" after they're told that their favorite radio station has been taken off the air because it wasn't profitable, now here's your chance to see what happens!<P ID="signature">______________

Nova M Radio Formed, Newcomb Named KPHX GM

Phoenix-based syndicated talk host Dr. Mike Newcomb has joined with Air America Radio founders Sheldon and Anita Drobny to form Nova M, a new company with the stated objective to "own and operate radio stations on a national platform providing an outlet for progressive content."

Nova M Radio will begin operating its first station, KPHX/Phoenix, on April 3 through an LMA with Continental Broadcasting Corp. In addition to hosting mornings on KPHX, Newcomb will also act as GM for the station. Following Newcomb's daily show, Air America Radio's network programming will round out the KPHX daily on-air lineup.

Yes, but it's not more favorable for Mr. Christy.

Now, they did happen to find their rich Democrats, but they're not from Arizona.
