Oh no! That's so sad. Wasn't 1590 a pretty decent signal, relatively speaking?

Somewhere (probably on another site) it was mentioned that CC had registered a "comedy1590.com" domain as part of a large push to put the 24/7 Comedy network on terrestrial stations. It was thought it would be WZRX. Guess not. ::)

They must have considered it a white elephant if they couldn't even donate it as a tax write-off. Had it not been for losing some towers, maybe they could have done that, but trying to donate an AM in need of substantial repairs doesn't work very well.

I worked for a small group that had an AM daytimer that was considered baggage because it was in a small town outside a larger market, but the directional signal pointed away from that market. They bought it for the FM, which did put a decent signal into the larger market. Unfortunately for them, the previous owner did not include the land the station sat on in the sale to them. The FCC was not open to licensees just turning in a license and walking away from the station in the early 90s, so they looked for other options. The best they could come up with was to donate it to a local bible college. That looked like it would would work until the people at the college found out they would be stuck having to move a 4 tower array since they could not buy the land it was on. I never heard what became of the AM, except that it did eventually go dark and the towers were torn down.

In the case of WZRX, it seems like they should have been able to apply to drop power low enough for ND operation so they could donate it. If nothing else, it could have been used as a TIS.

This was a great station. I especially enjoyed in the early 1970s and then again in the 1980s when it was WCCL and WYHT.

The Clarion-Ledger used to cover local radio. They should have written an article about the end of the station. I contacted someone to request that, but they did not cover it.

Exactly what was wrong with 1590? Just one tower down or something worse. It sounded good the last time I listened to it late last year. It was even in AM stereo when it was AOR and later Z-Rock. It was still stereo in the mid 90's when it was black gospel. It's a shame, I listened to that station a lot growing up, even under numerous formats top-40, country, adult standards, classic hits/oldies, album rock, heavy metal, southern soul/blues, news/talk/ sports W-1 WWUN, WYIG, WCCL, WYHT, "JMI AM" WZRX. Did I leave anything off?

Nothing wrong with it that lots of $$$ couldn't fix. The entire site needed to be rebuilt - towers, building, etc. I saw it the day the towers were dropped - it would have been a losing proposition to put the required $$$ and time into putting 1590 back on.

so the remaining towers were in danger of collapse also? So I guess the towers will be hauled away for scrap. I thought it sounded OK over the air, Will they be able to sell the transmitter and other equipment?

If it is a late model trans and equip, I'm sure it will go to another station. Or better yet ..backup.
