Life After Radio

In this day and age when many of us are considering what life will be like "after radio," I thought this was something encouraging.

The latest issue (may 08) of Readers' Digest has a photo of former Houston Radio goddess Dayna Steele on the cover. SHe's featured inside the magazine as one of the top 100 things great about America... Congratulations Dayna and thanks for what you've done and continue to do for Houston radio.

It brings to mind a question that might make for good discussion... what are some of our former radio friends doing now that they are out of the biz?

I constantly see names in media releases from people who were once featured on stations like KTRH... Janice Evans is working media relations for city Controller Anise Parker... Tracee Evans is press secretary for Congressman Kevin Brady of the Woodlands.. reporter Darrell Azar, is a spokesman for CPS or some agency like that in AUstin.... Last I heard, Brian Hill, formerly of KPRC (way before MOJO) was still the media guy at the Houston Zoo...

Just a thought starter..

Hey KC -

After being "departed" from CC Austin in March of 2000 I couldn't find a job to save my life. After 9/11 it only got worse. I ended up working construction for about a year. I was the only crew member that spoke/wrote/read english and the only legal one to work in the US.

Looking back, it was a pretty good year. No email. No meeting. No social networking sites. Just good, honest work. Got paid crap, but it beat getting unemployment checks and feeling like I was sucking off the gov't teet.

After that year, I got in with a great radio-related company and I've been here for 6 years. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got emails to write, a meeting to go to, and some social networking to do.

...by the way, I sure do miss going to Sam's Boat w/ ya! ;D

Mmmm Sam's Boat.... Hadn't thought about those days in a while.

Maybe we should have an old KLDE staff reunion there soon.

I am looking at life after radio since it's very hard to make a living in radio these days. And I think a KLDE reunion party at Sam's Boat would be great!

Someday when you grow up you'll understand all of this.

When we grow up we will understand? I am missing something? What is it?

Ahh...the Sam's Boat or Sam's Place decision. Good times. I have been out of radio for some time now. I hear my radio buddies asking themselves what the future of radio may or may not hold from them. It's kind of funny and kind of sad. In radio, I felt as if I was surrounded by the most confident people. Risk takers...outgoing types who could sell air, promote air and market air. I wish my friends from the old days would realize one thing. That radio is a million times harder to sell, to promote or to market than anything out there. Radio people have TALENT. They have something that not many people have in this world.... Passion, hustle and creativity.

Sometimes I remember some greats who I still admire: Doug Harris, Joe Pogge, Laurie Kenrick and Dusty Black.

I too am lost about this "when we grow up we will understand" comment. I didn't say I don't understand why people move to different careers, I just and curious as to which carreers they are moving toward, because I can see that someday I may be doing it as well.

As for a reunion for KLDE staff... I guess the best way to get something started is to have old staff contact me... just send me an email with your contact info and I'll see what we can come up with. My email is

WHAT?!?!?

Speaking of Life After Radio, what ever happened to Joe Pogge?

Joe Pogge operates a successful marketing and ad agency at Kirby@ Richmond. He still works with the Texans, Live Nation and other retail accounts.

Yes, there comes a time when you need to move on to new challenges, but radio already remains a big part of your heart. I am, and will always be, a radio news gal deep down in my soul. Ask any former news radio person and they will tell you it takes a long time to quit needing it. We certainly didn't do it for the money. I spent two decades of my best earning years making peanuts and loving almost every minute of it.

As my 10-year-old says, You Rock NuzChick! Every time she wants a new PixelChick, my daughter Kelly reminds me that what "we've" been doing has not been for the money, but for the hope we newspeople can tell people about something they didn't know about before! That's what we live for.

"I spent two decades of my best earning years making peanuts and loving almost every minute of it."

That sums it up for all of us, in my opinion.

Kevin-

Why limit yourself to just ex-KLDE folks? About 7 years ago, what was originally a "KFJZ reunion" in Ft. Worth turned in to a HUGE gathering of local D/FW radio personalities. From that came the Texas Radio Hall of Fame.

I am quite sure I am not the only guy that would love to see Joe, Barry and a few others. But, I'd feel out of place crashing a KLDE only party.

*BTW-I am tight with the owner and managers the of Sam's Boat in Stafford. I paid a few of their light bills in my earlier days.

Couldn't agree more Josh. I worked with your dad at KFJZ and TSN back in the 70s, and I will always regret missing that big reunion.Everybody you ever knew in DFW radio was there.

It would be great fun to have a market-wide reunion like that here in Houston. We've all known and worked with a lot of people we'd like to see again over some adult beverages.

I can't agree more. Most of us have worked with several people at other stations and or with someone who has... its that old degrees of separation thing if you think about it. I remember the old "Radio Days" events where all the stations put booths together for agency clients etc... it was about as close to a gathering of all the talent as I have ever seen.

I'll see what we can stir up in the coming weeks. I am actually vacationing next week so I'll work on it when I return.

Thanks for the idea.

Kevin

I'm in too. Tell you what, I'll look around for a couple of places. I'll even pony up for a website and space if we could have web savvy person build and maintain it. Any takers? E-Mail or call.

Kevin,

Would later-generation KLDE guys be welcome? I'd be honored to be allowed to just sit in the corner quietly and listen politely.

MV,

I bet you can't find one person that has worked with you that believes you would sit quietly in a corner, unless of course they have renewed your prescription for Prozac, or was it Ritilan? ;) :D ;D

I saw him sit very quietly in the corner one time... and only one time. The day he bought the ring for his new bride. That was the only time though.. and yes you would be welcome. I'm just now back from vacation and will try to get this thing going again.

We had a great reunion a couple years ago with Winslow and others from that Oldies 94.5 era. I'd show up at THIS one, too. What great memories!
