Lightning in a Bottle

"Lightning in a Bottle" - That time in your life where everything came together. All the parts worked or synergy existed. Over the last 40 years, there has been some great radio in Atlanta. I would like to know which radio station or show captured "lightning in a bottle" and when did it occur. Basically, when you worked at or listened to a station you did not know you were in the middle of capturing "lightning in a bottle", but looking back now, you can say it occured.

What were some of the elements that caused it to come together? This may help us all in determining how we may copy or immulate what happened then and make our product better today.

96 Rock, from the mid 80's until the mid 90's, was firing on all cylinders and kicked ass.
The mid 80's period, with Mark & Steve for AM, John Boy 10-2, Kaedy from 3-7, and Willard 7-12 was a package which was unbeatable.
I remember WKLS being #1 12+,and in quite a few other demos, for one book back in the mid 80's. Z93 went Classic rock not too long after that and took enough points off to knock 96 Rock down the list.
Today, you must admit that V103 just keeps crankin' it out trend after trend....book after book. Even with all the competition from Radio One and Cox Rick Caffey just keeps printing money with V103....it is simply amazing! V103 is a perfect example of "lightning in a bottle."

Goes to show how young these board posters are...

I go back to WQXI when Shannon was good in the early 70s.

WSB when Milo Hamilton did the Braves in the 70s.

WGST when it was a good news station in the early 70s.

99X when Alternative broke. Right station, right music, right programmer, right morning show. Ah, yes, the good old days.

929 Radio Atlanta when I get my hands on it. That's a future "Lightning in a Bottle."

The Morning X from about '95 - '01. The personalities, the station, everything.

I agree and the timeframe is dead on. It wasn't just the Morning X but the whole station had a sense of excitment and confidence to it. Also notable was when 99X was involved with a club propmotion during that time it was actually cool and not just a corporate entity promoting itself. There were times when I would chat with another non-radio friend and the topic would be something like 'isn't the MorningX great'? The only other times when non-radio people might talk about a station is usually about it sucking.

Z93 1975-85, locally programmed, local flavor
94Q 1980-86 and briefly in 1989, McKee, what else can I say?
Power 99 1986-92, truly the most dominant CHR in the south at the time

People forget that the first version of 680thefan - owned by Cox? - was the first Atlanta sportstalk and did very well in the early 90s. That's where Steak and Beau got their itch.

Scott Ferrall, to this day, is the most electric, most buzzed-about sportstalk personality in Atlanta radio history. He'd do a remote at Sports Authority - with the station asking and getting $5k for the two hours - and it was like Lindbergh landing in Paris. A mob scene.
