Any idea why the Lightning moved all of their games from 620 to 970? Perhaps Hannity isn't doing too well in the 6-9P slot? Just curious.
Conflicts with the Rays and the Bucs are reduced by placing the Bolts on 970.radioguy555 said:Any idea why the Lightning moved all of their games from 620 to 970? Perhaps Hannity isn't doing too well in the 6-9P slot? Just curious.
When 970 were awarded the rights to the (then) Devil Rays, it was not Clear Channel, it was Jacor. 620 was a Cox station. 1250 was WDAE the Sports Animal but signal was deficient. The agreement was for 970 before the 1250 purchase. The upgraded facilities to 1250 and 970 gave then, Clear Channel the ability to move them off of 970. It is why the Trop still has the internal AM frequency of 1260 instead of something closer to the 620 frequency.Parttimer said:The Rays started on 970 because the model for Clear Channel was WLW in Cincinnati, where the Reds have been a fixture (and a huge success) for decades.
When it became apparent that the geezers who listen to 970 wanted their regular talk shows instead of baseball, CC wanted to move the games to 620, but Vince Naimoli would only allow it if they fired Chris Thomas and Steve Duemig for regularly criticizing the team, and him personally. Only when ownership changed did the move to 620 take place, and it has been a big winner.
Baseball and hockey have a tough time coexisting once hockey hits the playoffs in the spring.
Baseball and football have always been more popular in the States than Hockey or Soccer. Basketball's audience was always very niche.radiodork said:Prior to becoming all-sports, 1250 AM was a simulcast of 100.7 FM for the longest I can remember. The signal wasn't strong enough to beam through any of the large buildings in Tampa so no one decided to do anything with it for probably a good ten years.
I like the Lightning on 970, not moving around from station to station like last season. I think the Rays deal made the Lightning odd-man-out on conflicts.
There was a Froggy station in Orlando on 98.1 during the 90's, was there a relationship?BIGRIGGER said:actually it was Froggy 1250 "Country Gold" for about a year in the early 90's when they took the W-101 simulcast off of it for a while.

Why is a web page a reason not to listen to the radio station?turbineblade said:another reason to listen to another station other than 970
