Anyone know why the Lightning are now simulcasting the Sun Sports auido for some of their games, as opposed to Mishkin's radio play-by-play?
______________

Dave Mishkin, the Lightning PBP guy, and his wife had a child last week.

From what I understand, Mishkin will rejoin the team on its road trip come this weekend.

So, the Lightning new that Mishkin would probably need some time at some point and didn't bother to find a possible fill-in? Bush league to say the least. But at least we're better off than those NHL teams that have simulcast crap all the time.

BTW.. Do you think Mrs. Mishkin screamed as loud during the delivery as Dave does after a routine goal?

Probably because there were no other broadcasters...IN TAMPA FREAKING FLORIDA...who were qualified to do a hockey broadcast. And, oh btw, if someone has the urge to ask why Larry Hirsch wasn't asked to do so, don't. From the impression that I got, he had burned a lot of bridges around here. But then again, I could be totally off-base.

Don't understand the criticism here. Peckham and Taylor are excellent. They know the team and the game. Why not for a few games do simulcast with familiar voices. While on the subject of play by play, Staats and Magrane are also as good as it gets. Freed and partner sound good on radio as well.

I like Pecks and the Chief as much as anybody. But, that's on TV. I find TV simulcasts don't translate well to radio for Hockey. Very hard to truly keep up with the action. Too much gets lost in translation.

Thank you for the logic. TV...Radio...theres a difference. I'm sorry to be picky, but simulcasting TV/Radio sportscasts is one piece of the puzzle that began that long, slow , down turn that this business suffered. ...all of a sudden, radio GM's got it in their mind that just because someone looks nice on TV, they can be hired for a few bucks to do the news, weather, and whatever other duties full time radio people used to do. ( Mind you, this isnt a shot at Peckham and Taylor who are an excellent team on tv...and given their knowledge and ability to communicate, would do well on a radio broadcast)

I'm told Hirsch no longer lives in the area.

And to the poster up the board, just because its 'TAMPA FREAKING FLORIDA' means nothing, you moron. This, despite their recent downturn is the home of the DEFENDING FREAKIN STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS......

One of the greatest annoucers Canada ever produced lives in Palm Harbor -- Don Chevrier, who's called just about every major sport in North America....including "freaking" hockey.

Was he back from his Olympic curling assignment?

Unfortunately, I'm sure they saw this as a way to save a few bucks. Mishkin came from Hershey, it might have been nice to call up one of the Lightning's current minor-league announcers. There are some talented guys toiling in small markets waiting for that break.
______________

Moron, eh? Bite me, punk. When you compare the quality of broadcasting overall with the amount of talent and people that are in the industry here, it's more than a little overrated. If want to make this a name-calling contest, I strongly suggest you take it somewhere else.

Yes, of course there is a difference between radio and TV play by play. Radio paints the picture, whereas TV shows the picture, however, having said that...pros like Peckham and Taylor know that they need to be more descriptive during a simulcast. These guys are darn good. They make it sound easy. That's how good they are. They work well together. Seldom, if ever, do they tread on each other. They also walk the thin line of doing the "homer" thing well without sounding like the team walks on water. I would put any of our major league broadcast teams up for comparison to any other market. They are all excellent.

TV/radio simulcasts used to be quite common on local NHL hockey broadcasts here in the United States.

Back during the team's "glory days" of the mid-1970's, Gene Hart and Don Earle's calls of Philadelphia Flyers games were simulcast on radio and TV; and I believe that the Chicago Blackhawks' games are still TV/radio simulcasts although I think that will change next season.

Peckham almost does a radio play by play on TV. He calls every pass, shot, check, etc...whereas John Kelly from years ago (by the way I loved his calls) left holes and did sort of a "shorthand" version. "Beers on the point...slapshot....wide..." "Petr Klima...fanned on it"

Certainly the announcing teams with work could make a simulcast palatable for radio and television. Unfortunately, in most of these situations radio is the throwaway and the crews are told to make sure it work for television since that's where there is more audience and ad revenue. Radio almost always ends up with the short end of the stick (no pun intended. Maybe there was a pun in there after all)

That's why in most situations I'll take the low paid kid working by himself in a radio booth, then listening to the TV guys try and do both.
