lightning takes out Berkshire Broadcasting cluster in Danbury

Yesterday's lightning storm took out the STL for 98Q, WLAD, and the 107.3 WAXB translator. The transmitters were all still running but no audio. It must have been about 4 hours before they were back on. WAXB 850am was still running although the audio sounded like it was clipping. Since the 850 transmitter is in Ridgefield and not Danbury it must be a different link.

I wonder if they have an STL path to Ridgefield or if they're still using landlines. With fewer and fewer phone techs that understand audio grade lines it's tough trying to keep them in one piece.

WIHS was having quite a few problems with the landlines for YEARS. When I got there, I installed a Moseley STL, and the tower guys installed the antennas. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! The phone lines became the backup... but they still failed on a regular basis. Finally, NEW phone guys came out and REPLACED them with digital audio lines. The audio quality is drastically improved! Still not as good as the Moseley STL, but MUCH better than those analog lines! :)

an EAS just sounded for an amber alert on WAXB (107.3). Could not understand what they were saying however at all.
