Lights Out During "Countdown".

Some studio lighting failed during "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" on Current TV Monday night. KO kept his cool though. Now it can be revealed that he wears dungarees because he did the rest of the show away from a desk. Keith has used a humorous bit at the half-way mark. He pretends that he's on the Dumont Television Network and his show is pre-empting a show that once was on Dumont, like the game show "Down You Go with Dr. Bergen Evans". Last night, it might as well have been on Dumont. (All the satellite feeds worked as well as the taped segments).

You sure Olbemann wasn't just Going Green? I had seen him do this before on Sunday Night Football.

First of all, the "Going Green" concept seems to be NBC's thing. Secondly, I read somewhere that Olbermann frequently makes references to DuMont in promos for his show, mainly due to the fact that Current is not as watched as the others.

Wonder if Olby immediately thought of the fire alarm that went off during "NBC Nightly News" and thought, "That's not supposed to happen here, is it?"

Current isn't watched as much as Dumont was.

Maybe Olbermann is as familiar with Current as the rest of America. So to his way of thinking, Dumont probably morphed into Current over the years.
I have that same problem sometimes. I still call CVS Revco and think the Big 12 has 12 teams.

Actually, what DuMont morphed into is Fox. The DuMont owned stations became Metromedia, which is what News Corp swallowed up to create Fox in the mid 80's.

The candle last night was also a nice touch.

Dumont had two owned-and-operated VHF TV stations on channel five in top-ten markets: WABD in New York, and WTTG in Washington, DC. These markets reached close to twenty million people in those days, so some Dumont programs would eventually develop a cume in the hundreds of thousands just by chance.

DuMont also owned WDTV in Pittsburgh, then the only VHF signal in what was at the time the #6 market.
This apparently allowed them great leverage to get programs cleared in other markets.

Meanwhile, tonight was the third night of Olbermann in front of a plain black backdrop. No explanation, not even the candle gag at the start of the broadcast. It doesn't take three days to fix studio lighting (or at least it shouldn't)...anyone know what's going on there?

Two 'splanations (apologies to Ricky Ricardo)...

1. Current TV is running out of current...and the electric authority gave the channel it's final shutoff warning.
2. Olby missed Al Gore's memo that he needs to limit amount of miasmic greenhouse gases from his mouth, and they decided to do a carbon cap by limiting the studio lighting to somehow minimize the impact on "global climate change."

Mediaite.com claims that Current may be thinking of keeping the dark background a la Charlie Rose. I've glanced at The Young Turks, which seems to be from another locale. Current is supposed to have a post-debate report Saturday night with Cenk Uygur and the actual winner if the 2000 presidential election, among others. Undoubtedly they'll use a real set then.
