KTAR-FM sounds well produced, passionate, great news/info/and sounds like a station in Phoenix.....finally, with talk hosts that are emotional and in the demo....they have the triple threat combo. Best news/best talk/best signal.
Let's not get carried away here.
I finally had a chance to listen to Mac Watson yesterday, and I must say that I was partly impressed and partly disappointed. On one hand, his voice and delivery sound almost precisely like Tom Leykis circa 1987, which--by the way--is a good thing, back when Tom was a magnanimous host capable of carrying an audience without talking about his sex-life. For an out of market host, he was learning the ropes quickly and wasn't some wishy-washy host who would take crap from callers--also good.
On the down side, he fits in the mold of typical KTAR host (and 1980 style talk) where the hours are segmented into question-answer sessions, "this hour we're talking about topic x, this hour topic y". I know that at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting they teach you that this is a good model for a talk show, but it's not. Moreover, the show's constant interruptions by traffic that no one needs/cares about and weather that we can all see by looking out our windows is a huge distraction. There's nothing worse than cutting a caller off during a good discussion simply because you have a "hard break" that is unnecessary.
Just a note: The 202 is always backed up, I-10 westbound has significant delays, so does the Eastbound I-10 from 44th street all the way back to 75th avenue... EVERY DAY.
Weather: "Clear Tonight lows in the mid 70s, mostly sunny tomorrow with a high near 93" cut and paste, it's not necessary every ten minutes. (is it raining where you are?)
On the whole, however, Mac Watson is a HUGE improvement over anything that KTAR has mustered up to this point. Glenn Beck--even six hours in the can--is still better than a newsblock or McBland. Now, just hand out pink slips to Aunt Carlos, dos_gay and the morning snewz and you're headed in the right direction for sure.
