Why is it so many females on the air overuse the word "like"? It's like they can't get through a sentence without like popping in the word like 2 or 3 times. I know it's like a speech mannerism that's pretty like common but also pretty like annoying. I've heard some guys using it but not overusing it. Your bank teller wouldn't like use it. Your doctor or dentist wouldn't like use it. Could we like stop it or at least like curtail its use? What is the origin of this anyway? When you say "I'm like" does that mean just can't like describe the situation or you're like similar to it? And I'm really not implying only females use it but it's more common among that species both on and off the radio. Maybe it's like me but when I hear it too often I think "ditz". Maybe if you're playing to a younger audience that has a hard time formulating thoughts and sentences they can relate but I hear this on most formats across the board.

I apologize in advance for straying from your radio-related topic to television.

People talk the way their friends talk. And they pick it up from tv as well.

Just watch Jay Leno, one of the most horrible interviewers in the history of television: "Like...ummm...ya know...like...uhhhhhh......" The man was horrible before he took over from Johnny Carson and he has gone steadily downhill ever since.

Listen to Randy Jackson on American Idol. When he isnt saying "dawg", every other word out of his mouth is "like".

My job involves servicing products in a major drugstore chain. I was in one of my stores and walked into the stockroom at one point to get some product. Two of the girls (probably each about 19-20 years old) who worked in the store were on break. One of the girls was talking about her boyfriend and the other was offering her advice...and it went a little something like this:

Girl 1: So, like, I called him and, like, asked him, like, how we was and he said, like, ok but he was tired. But he didnt, like, sound tired, so I, like, asked him whats wrong and, like, he said nothing. So, I go, are you sure, and he is all, yeah, Im fine. And then he said he had to go.

Girl 2: Like, I think you should, like, call him again and, like, ask him straight out, like, whats going on and, like, stuff like that.

Do you think the guy was tired of, oh I dont know, his girlfriend not being able to carry on a simple conversation???

Then again (like)...there are (like) some women who claim to be broadcasters who(like) feel (like) using the (like) word (like) over and over again doesn't make any difference? (Like) AS IF nobody is noticing?
