Like Magic, 3 People Disappear At Merlin's FM News 101.1

And news out of New York City yesterday that Merlin let a few people go at sister station WEMP, as well... the two moves may be related... hmmm...

How on earth is Guy Bauer still on the air at 101.1?

His delivery is absolutely UNBEARABLE.

Station is a joke. Should've kept some flavor of modern rock accompanied by a rebranding instead.

How long until like magic, FM News 101.1 disappears? Just like FM News 101.9 in New York. Randy may not want CBS' news listeners but the audience he's seeking doesn't want him either! :)

KGO-AM will have to look at this closely.
Cumulus will have to look and see if its a good idea to do all-news.
CBS will run over WEMP & WIQI (Merlin) and Cumulus all-News in San Francisco.

CBS adding an FM simulcast to KCBS certainly didn't stop KGO from letting a lot of staffers go in late 2011... Like Merlin, they're new to the "all-news" format. Except Merlin as a group is a novice to radio...

Also KCBS in SFO ran over KNAI 99.7 FM in the 1970's. Also When Group W merged with CBS in the mid-1990's they killed off KPIX FM because 95.7 FM was low in the San Francisco Ratings while KCBS was neck and Neck with KGO for the top 3 Ratings spots in San Francisco. However I can see WTOP and WNEW-FM still go neck and neck in DC.

maybe they should have just left Q101 alone.....

And continue to appeal to a demo that doesn't listen to terrestrial radio and advertisers don't want? Yeah, that's real smart.

No disrespect intended Mark, why would that age group listen?

With the exception of sports, I don't know anyone under 30 that listens to the radio.

In terms of billing, is FM news bringing in more revenue than Q101 did?

I don't think its possible with their .3 rating.

Q101 is gone now. It may not have been the greatest, the new rock audiance at least had something.

Now there is no reason for them to turn on a radio, except to play their I POD.

What happens when that demo is in their 30's and 40's,you will be programming to no one, radio will be obsolete.

For what, a full power FM station that has HALF the listeners that a Joliet rimshot has?

I know the advertisers are not knocking on the door to get on WIQI.

With all the saleries being paid, with very little revenue coming in, it is safe to say Q101 was doing better than this joke.

I am not saying it billed great, but it was billing better than this station is now.

How long will it be until the "money" backing this station say enough, were not dumping anymore in this fiasco?

I listened to Cumulus Owned KGo-AM 810 and they are even better than WEMP and the Merlin O&O's. KGO at least got Jeffery Schuab from KPIX and KCBS-FM 106.9 to work for KGo and they have KPIX5 John Kessler to go on board.

KGO used to be a great station. Jim Dunbar must be wondering what the heck happened after he left.

How long will Merlin put up with the abysmal numbers WIQI is getting? While it is nice to have two all news stations in Chicago, WBBM is a far superior station. WIQI does not sound live. Great voices, but it sounds very sterile and automated. New York's WEMP sounds a little better, and why does WIQI run Lionel's commentaries? He is a known entity in New York, having done local talk shows and his regular spot on Channel 11, but who in Chicago knows who he is?

If Randy Michaels really wanted to make a run against WGN, he should've gone News/Talk on 101.1 FM. He should've done likewise in NY with 101.9 where he would've had a huge format hole to fill. Chicago has lots of local talk, New York has virtually none.

It is what it is! :(

Seems like if one takes a job at Merlin, he should assume it's temporary going in.
