Lima Battle: Wild or Star: Who shines in hit music?

Both have their own qualities:

Wild plays rhythmic leaning titles while Zoo has a pop-rock melody
Its almost as comparing Jammin JJS to K92 in Roanoke or The Beat to Mix 100 in Lubbock

Hell-o:

Well, even though I'm employed through Maverick Media (A.K.A. - STAR 92.1), I would like to chime in on this...and my answer may surprise you!

When it comes to hit music/Top-40, A LOT has changed in the last ten years since the downfall of traditional contemporary Top-40 radio. Everything is so divided into various categories of the same type of formats now like Top-40/M & Top-40/R that it really depends on what your musical tastes are in relation to the current state of music. My personal tastes in music are FAR different from the average 26, 27-year-old that sometimes it's difficult to really say who has the better station. So, my opinion(s) on it goes like this.

If you're young (I.E. - 18-25), chances are you'll probably be listening to WILD. If you're older than 25, it's a toss-up. I know a lot of people that fall into those two different demographics outside of the business in Lima that listen to both, but when you break it down, STAR and WILD go after two completely different audiences in the marketing department...but sometimes the reality of the ratings tend to sometimes go in a different direction. If WILD was around back when I was in my teens, I probably would have listened to them (even if I was in the business...as I was at that age). As I've gotten a little bit older and my tastes have changed (as well as my mood/temper over the last couple-three years has now shifted to that of a monk in a seminary), I tend to lean to a more calmer style of music...so, enter STAR, and sometimes WDOH or MIX (yes, I do listen to the competition sometimes). If I'm in a particularly fiesty mood, I'll put on WBYR/98.9 THE BEAR, but that mostly tends to happen at night when they go a little heavier.

In summary, I think it all depends on what the audience member(s) are looking for in regards to their particular tastes/moods. WILD is marketed more towards the younger people, while STAR tends to lean more adult.

I guess it just varies on what the person likes...

I had the opportunity to travel to Lima recently and listened to both for a short time. The only comment I have is about the amount of distortion I heard on Star 92.1. When the female announcer was talking, I wanted to rip the speakers out of my car. I realize you want to be "loud" on the dial, but sometimes there is a reason not to turn everything to "11". :-\
Other than that, blvd_pbj seems to have summed up the format differences pretty well.
