Limbaugh Under Fire For Steinbrenner Remarks

On Tuesday, the day Yankees owner George Steinbrenner died, Rush Limbaugh offered an unusual eulogy, drawing the ire of Al Sharpton.

Addendum: Rush started his Wednesday show by saying that he had "hit a grand slam" in "tweaking" the media to obsess over his comment, which he says was made in jest.

What is it with this inability of people to recognize and understand satire? It's clearly one reason why National Lampoon magazine couldn't stay in business. Sharpton (a man I do kind of admire, by the way) believes, apparently correctly, that most people are stupid enough that he can profit politically by pointing to examples of social satire as literal, genuine outrages. He must be right, because this doctrine has worked for him. He's not the only one; people on the right do it, too.
Evidently, there are gillions of people out there who are incapable of laughing at satire -- they just don't get it. Even Rush's own listeners and loyal followers sometimes fall into the trap of taking his jokes at face value, not appreciating the subtle ironies or the more reasoned basis underlying the joke.

It's politically incorrect to appreciate the art of "satire". The "One nation - one mind" movement is alive and well!
