LIN buys WLUK

Green Bay Fox station WLUK is among the stations being sold off by Emmis. It was bought by LIN Broadcasting, LIN's first Wisconsin station. LIN owns, among others, WISH-Indianapolis, WANE-Fort Wayne and WLFI-Lafayette Ind. Didn't think very highly of them during the brief term I was in Indiana but that was many years ago.

One wonders if Journal would have bought WLUK (it bought other Emmis stations) if it hadn't already bought WGBA in the Green Bay market.

As long as Journal doesn't have a newspaper in Green Bay, it might have been a possibility. But you won't see Journal adding to their Milwaukee cluster because of the grandfathered ownership of WKTI, & WTMJ-AM & TV, plus the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal.

WLUK

Journal was reportedly looking at WFRV-TV 5 first, but CBS didn't want to sell.

They also have an LMA with Channel 32 in Appleton, run out of their Channel 26 operation near Green Bay's airport and casino!

LIN is a decent operator, and diversified in other advertising ventures, so they'll do well in GB.

Re: WLUK

WLUK-TV will return to NBC and Fox will return to 26 after 10 years.
Edited by PassDutch on 08/27/05 07:34 PM.

Not if Fox can help it - it wants the VHF position in an NFC market as long as it has NFC football.

Re: WLUK

...And Journal Communications is selling NBC together as a combo with WTMJ-TV 4.

Why would they want to split that up?

Re: WLUK

And besides, every TV station in Green Bay have grown tired of playing musical chairs with affiliation switches, so I don't see them flipping anytime in the near future.

Consider that there are two ways for station to change affiliation: the network either buying the station or making a big offer (CBS buying WFRV, Savoy-Fox buying WLUK in 1994) or the ownership deciding it wants to change at a time when the contract is up at another station. Journal loves NBC, has just gained more power with that network by adding WGBA and doesn't want to change; CBS owns its station; WBAY is tops in news and is happy with ABC; and I don't see WLUK dropping Fox for UPN or the WB.

Don't count on it: Journal reupped WGBA-26's affiliation with NBC before LIN came into the picture.
