I can undertsand why linda got fed up, KPRC managment doesnt give a damn about quality anymore, they've become the car crash/murder highlight reel of Houston. Jerome Grey (pardon the pun) White Knighting into KPRC to save the day isnt going to help that much unless theres a fundamental shift away from the way they currently report news.

In addition, I dont believe the decision was ever about race, it was about lindas age..sorry to say theres still a double standard in the news business when it comes to anchors.

So sad. Linda was one of the few classy folks at 2. I hope she winds up with an even better gig.

If age is the problem, she needs to beat down the doors at KTRK. Age ain't nothing but a number over at 13. How old IS Marvin? He's got to be scaring 90. Dave Ward is definitely in his 70's, Bob Allen and Ed Brandon are on up there as well. <P ID="signature">______________

I agree. Linda is certainly a talent a lame operation like KPRC needs. She should have hung in there a while longer. The new GM will most certainly make sweeping changes to the news operation that will most likely result in the sacking of News Director Nancy Shafran. She has been the leader of the schlock news coming out of there, if you can call what they deliver news. Linda would probably fit nicely into the new look you have to assume they will take on after the new GM gets his feet wet.

One can only hope and pray and hope and pray some more that Shafran will get canned. How she's kept her job 10+ years is a mystery to me! Most news directors get the can if they can't turn the numbers around by the end of the first book, yet somehow she's kept her job while the numbers tanked, then tanked some more.

I never called it news. I have always referred to it as "Infotainment 2 Houston" and, later "Useless 2 Houston"

Maldonado comes from a top-quality station in Jacksonville, WJXT-4. They have a history of quality journalism, only recently becoming infected with the Post-Newsweek mandated "Local-itis" dropping "Eyewitness News" for "Channel 4: The local station." Anyway, hopefully Maldonado will steer them towards quality newscasts.

I really don't know where Lorelle could go. All of the other stations are pretty filled-up with talent. If KRIV wanted to score a coup, they could dump Melissa whats-her-name from the 9:00pm news and install Lorelle as co-anchor. But no one ever accused KRIV (recently anyway) of being thinking that far ahead.

How crazy would it be if she ended up at KHOU, taking Jerome Gray's spot! I always thought it was weird that they had 2 guys anchoring the 6 p.m. news.

You must be relatively young (20's or 30's)! When I was growing up, it was ALL men ALL the time. Then, slowly, they begin to hire weather "girls" for the morning and noon news with a few pioneering female reporters. Finally, in the mid-to-late 70's, you began to see the now-common male-female anchor teams. In the 70's, the women were sometimes referred to as "assistant" anchors, not co-anchors.

Word is Shafran is up to GM at WJXT. However, the higher ups really like Skip Valet ND at WKMG to be their new head honcho.

Reading your posts, I can understand your disdain of KPRC. I may not agree with their content a lot of times they had to try some things to offer an alternative to KTRK and KHOU. I honestly did not mind the tabloid newscast they offered but at least they tried. They were #1 for one sweeps period... I think it was 1999 or 2000... but fell sharply.

You are wrong here. Henry Maldonado is the GM of WKMG, Local 6. He held that position for over 4 years+. You are referring to Larry Blackerby, ex-GM of WJXT. He is a news guy with a lot of sense. He will do well at the deuce.

That being said, they also hired Lauren Freeman as daybreak/midday anchor with Owen. Interesting hire coming from Blackerby. All we can hope is that we warm up to her.

Word is that she might be at KHOU where Jerome left. Who knows? She definitely can't fit at KTRK but KRIV could be an answer but the demos skewed the younger audience. I hope she stays in Houston.

Like I said, I still do not undersatnd how she has stayed at KPRC for so long...and to be considered for promotion on top of it. Lord help WJXT.

There have been a few brights spots at KPRC. I gave them a chance when they first switched to "Local 2" during the Athens Olympics. For whatever reason, they were doing serious newscasts (or at least, less fluffy newscasts) during the Olympics. Unfortunately they went right back to their old format just in time for sweeps (which, if I remember correctly featured a "live" home break-in - timed of course).

Thanks for that...I don't know why Maldonado's name just sticks in my head. I should have surfed the Washington Post Company website before I posted that.

Would she be content to do the midday and 6:00 newscasts, though? That's about the only place they could fit her. I don't see them jettisoning Lisa Foronda in order to pick up Ms. Lorelle.
