"Lindsey" from Andy Baskin's show

Whats her story? I called there today did not have a good experience with her.

The show with Manaloff was weaving in and out of topics, Tribe, Browns, Buckeyes, Tennis, Hockey, etc... Baskin basically billed himself as a "hockey guy" being a big fan, loved the game, was a coach, etc... That triggerd that I had a hockey question that I have been dying to discuss with a hockey expert for some time now and Baskin has basically billed himself as a hockey expert. So I picked up the phone to call in.

I got his phone screener/ sometime on air personality "Linsdey". I told her what I wanted to talk about, less than a minute after Baskin billed himself as the biggest hockey fan in Cleveland.

She, told me that they were talking about Ohio State at that moment and were only taking Ohio State calls. So I asked her if they were dictating what the callers wanted to talk about. She proceeded to give me a discombobulated (sp?) rant-of-an earful about how and why Ohio State was a "more important" (her words, not mine) and a more pertinent and interesting topic than anything I had to say about hockey and thats what they were taking calls about. She then, rudely, thanked me for listening and hung up on me.

Now, Im not expert caller, but is dictating a topic and refusing to take a call on something else that has been recently discussed, is this standard practice in sports radio?? I seriously dont know, it might be for all I know.

But I know the rudeness isnt, or at least shouldnt be, standard.

Can someone please shed some light on this, maybe give me some back ground on this "girl" and why she is so rude or so arrogant on the phones to the callers. Shouldnt they be trying to make nice, gain listeners so early in the operation?

No one wants "The Fan" to succeed more than I do, I have been highly critical of WKNR for a long time now. I just hope that this type of thing is the exception and not the rule as to how they will treat their listeners/ customers. Maybe she was just having a bad day, I dont know.....

Calling a talk show about topic you want is akin to requesting a song on music radio, if it's not on the playlist, you're outta luck. That's what they have call screeners.
I only know of one talk station without them, which is why you can hear a call about the economy followed by an old woman trying to light a pilot light, followed by a guy bashing Obama, followed by a woman with a cat in a tree.

That's Lindsay Foltin (aka "Lindsay Baseball").

She actually came over from WKNR. She was an intern who graduated to producer. She was a utility player, running the board on various shows and time slots on both 850 and KNR2 1540 for the past couple of years.

This is her first regular gig in the fact that "Talking Heads" is her main shift, and doesn't have to worry about bouncing all over the board.

that explains it ;)

I'll take "What Are Typical WNIR Calls" for 100, Alex!

Or having to toil among the station's "Bratty Bunch" on a day-to-day basis.

And think about it. She was the ONLY staffer hired directly over from WKNR. (Dustin Fox was only a seasonal contributor, not a regular GKB employee.)

THAT should tell you something.

Now that 92.3 The Fan is up & running...that station gets about 75% of my sportstalk listening (which is about half the time I'm in my car...the other half is listening to my MP3 player and about 2,000 songs).

About 20% goes to WKNR (mostly Brinda and I like Roda when he's doing a show solo, but that's about it).

The rest of my sportstalk listening time goes to 1540 (or 990 in Massillon if I'm down south) in order to hear certain ESPN network hosts I like (Colin C., for example).

For what it's worth, my WKNR listening has been steadily dropping in the past 2 or 3 years since they've gone to a more what I call "Howard Stern Light"/silly/jr. high lockerroom approach. Boring!

Now, we have a sports option (if you're where 92.3 signal is OK...lots of holes in the coverage). Sure hope they eventually move it over to 98.5 where the signal is excellent all over northeastern Ohio...but, that may be wishful thinking. :)

Wondering how other folks' listening on this board has changed since 92.3 The Fan began earlier this week.

p.s.: Don't let station call screeners' attitudes get to you...most are pretty nice people who are thrilled to be "working in radio" and hope themselves to be on the air.

It's funny. At the open today there are mentioning this very post. They didn't mention this board by name, but it has to be this one.

I wasn't crazy about my call-in experience with her, either, and to be honest, the on-air "googling" of her by the men there is surprisingly unprofessional. She seems a bit ditzy to me, sorry. Sounds like her dad was in sports (engineering), and combined with her looks, got a good foot in the door.

Hopefully that improves. I think Dennis Manaloff should be permanent on that show.

Doesn't sound like D-Man is there today...Zac Jackson from FS Ohio is there, though I don't know if he's a guest or co-host yet.

They really need to figure out how to keep D-Man there. It's a different show when he's next to Andy.

Listening habits: well, sports radio wise, it's been 90%-plus in favor of the Fan at this point, but part of that is me listening because it's new and I'm "covering it".

Still, I was settled in with The Bull and The Fox yesterday, and realized at about 5 or so that I probably should check in with R&R to see how they're reacting to the competition over at the Halle Building.

I dipped into 'KNR for about 5 minutes, noticed they were a bit faster paced than I remember, then replaced the radio in my kitchen with one that can get 92.3. :D

About that reception situation, the OMW World Headquarters is "somewhere in Northern Summit County" (as far as I'll go :) ). I'm in pretty favorable terrain for reception from all of Northeast Ohio - really, one reason I bought this place! - and two existing radios, one on each floor, get 92.3 clearly.

The HD setup here upstairs picks it up fine, but 92.5 trashes the sidebands, so no HD (no big deal, I am in no hurry to pick up whatever version of Radio 92.3 that they moved to HD2). Crisp and clear in analog.

The main table radio in the living room picks up 92.3 just fine, also crisp and clear.

The (now former) radio on the kitchen table can't pick up 92.3 to save its life. 92.5 is dominant and spills over.

I suspect it's because the selectivity on that radio isn't as good as the other two. I moved a radio from the office over, and it picks up 92.3 fine in the same location.

In the car, 92.3 now seems a little better than it did as a music station in the Akron area. I haven't gotten out to the west side to catch it since. I also haven't gone south of downtown Akron since the format change.

Andy just announced on the show that Jeff Phelps starts Monday.

And he even gave your Mighty Blog of Fun(tm) an on-air shoutout! I guess I'm not banned from the airwaves. :D

She handled the call just fine. She's busy, and she informed the OP what the topic was about and thanked him for listening. She's not supposed to engage in conversation, she has a job to do.

That was actually quite a solid plug for OMW, and well deserved. Pretty cool!

Wow, Im sorry I didnt hear that. What did they say? I only heard the show for a minute and they were paying high praise to OMW for all thier fast, accurate info. It was quite glowing.

Obviously Im dying to know what was said about my post. Is the audio available somewhere? If not, can someone paraphrase for me?

Thanks.

She was really rude. Her thanking me was sarcastic and the fact that she hung up on me was evidence of that.

Im not an expert caller, but I have called other shows before, even briefly working on a show for a time a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time ago. Never was I informed that telling a caller that a topic that was just spoken about minutes ago was off the table and ONLY calls on another subject would be allowed.

As I said, maybe that is standard practice in some places, but nowhere that I was familiar with.

Its good to know that they are reading this board, though..... ;)

Ron, too bad they only put up podcasts of big interviews. They should put up the segments on you and me! :D

They went into detail the second time they talked about this thread...mentioning the name of this site and your name, Ron.

I THINK that's what prompted the Lake Erie Monsters to send over some shirts, which ended up in the hands of Adam and Dustin later in the afternoon.

That is hysterical... If they keep talking about R-I and OMW on 92.3, I wonder if the radio geek audience will increase? Props to OMW for the shout!

And even though I haven't heard this exchange or never called 92.3... let's lay off Lindsay. She's just doing her job - and I think it's a good sign to see women working at a radio station whose audience is likely dominated by male listeners...

Given there's enough ears, that wish just might come true... ::)

You mean they didnt just mention it at the top, but this thread and, indirectly, me and my experience was a topic on the show, multiple times yesterday???? You are blowing my mind, dude. *lol** Im not suprised that OMW is a topic, you guys are breaking new ground and news in the industry almost every day. But Im just a listern/ caller/ message board poster.

Was she contrite or apologetic about it? What did Baskin say about it? Just curious. Thanks.

They mentioned this thread briefly not long after the start of the show, saying Lindsey was getting some grief (or something like that) from the message boards. They talked about it for a bit, then moved on.

The extended bit was a couple of hours (?) later, where they mentioned R-I, this thread and you by name. Lindsey did end up apologizing something like "if (you) were offended by how (she) handled the call". Really gotta get an audio clip or something.

I heard that The Bull mentioned OMW later in the afternoon. I was out and about, and missed parts of the show (oddly enough, I was out west and getting a feel for their signal).

OK, we had our day. :)

And yes, I'm thrilled that the Mighty Blog was a brief topic on two shows on The Fan yesterday...but it's Sports Radio, not Radio Geek Talk. :D

I'm happy for the mentions I get...but after Andy Baskin gave me a Twitter shoutout on his NewsChannel 5 weekend sports show once, I told him he could go ahead and retire me in the Twitter shoutout section...I got my "hit".

I really should start paying more attention to how WKNR (and even WTAM and WMMS) are responding.

I wonder if Alan Cox is paying attention to what 92.3 is doing...the station's strongest show by far is in afternoon drive, and I get the feeling that the new station may be aiming more at WTAM and WMMS than WKNR. THAT is a much tougher battle than vs. R&R.

OK, we had our day. :)

Im actually in Oberlin and have some minor trouble with the signal in various places of this building. Its a bit frustrating, but if I work it enough, I can find it adequately enough. If the rumored switch to 98.5 does happen, that will be welcome.

I have completely forgotton about WKNR this week. Im not running a blog, so I dont have to guage response like you do. ;) I am curious what, if anything, is being done or said in the wake of 92.3.

I am a fan of Alan Cox, so I have been able to catch parts of his show on the downloads, but I havent heard him mention it. I also havent heard every bit of the show, so it may have been talked about, I dont know.

Triv and Rover are never afraid to "mix it up" with other shows or personalities. It will be interesting to guage the response from them over the coming weeks.
