From the article:
But officials at Infinity Broadcasting, which owns the station, said the new format was right for New York. "We did a lot of market research and found a hole in the market that wasn't being served by any other station," said Chad Brown, CBS' vice president and general manager.

So they take a unique format that was serving people and replace it with a cheap format. I think the only "market research" they did was look at how much the WCBS-FM jocks were getting payed.
______________

They could have kept the music (maybe shifted it a little more 80's and less 60's and kept the brand name with cheaper jocks. The idea of blowing up one of the strongest brands in FM radio was stupid. I see a "New Coke" deja vu. You have a station with decent ratings and billing in excess of $25mil a year and trash it when you have sister up the dial that hasn't had one format for more than nine months in the past five years. Hello, McFly??????

(BTW... Is it possible that this is some sort of outrageous stunt???)

That point was and is being discussed in this thread.
______________

WCBS Demise So Big, It's On Yahoo's Front Page

Yes, this particular format flip - not so much a similar one in Chicago - has nade the front-page news briefs on Yahoo.com.

NYC radio station suddenly drops oldies. Only a mere mention of the Chicago flip is included in the story. But perhaps the legendary status of the station and the atmosphere (Micky Dolenz' 100th show celebration) was the reason they got the bigger headline. That, and of course, the fact that Chicago is "the second city". But I digress...
