That's the equivalent of saying "Does anyone know what's the best way to word process using Windows operating system?". Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaar too general.

Do you have 5 listeners or 500 million? Are you doing 50k/s or 500mb/s? Are you using shoutcast dnas, icecast, windows media?

You need to know linux. Bottom line. If you can't recompile the kernel to increase your file descriptors because your server is suddenly denying connections, then you need a competent sysadmin.
______________

Again...that depends on your number of listeners and your setup. Are you using MP3, OGG, WMA or something else? Is this box collocated or sitting on your home DSL line?

Details, man. Details.
______________

As far as I know there's no live365 encoder for linux.
______________

If you are streaming with a non-pro account on Live365, you will be limited to 56k mp3 or 64k mp3PRO. For live 56k mp3, you can use LiveIce available at http://star.arm.ac.uk/~spm/software/liveice.html which will take a live source and send it to an Icecast or Shoutcast server. Best bet would be to also run Shoutcast or Icecast on your system, then set Live365 to run in "relay" mode. That way Live365 connects to your server when you have listeners, and relays it to a set number of free listeners and unlimited paying VIP listeners.

For best results on Live365, you need an mp3PRO encoder. I don't know of any available for Linux. The best is SimpleCast which is only available for Windows. SimpleCast will run on any modern flavour of Windows. For my station, it is running on an ancient Pentium III 450MHz system and has no problems encoding three simultaneous live streams at different bit rates. SimpleCast offers every available mp3 and mp3PRO format including "dual mono" streaming which is amazing if used with the right bit rate/sampling rate combination. Check out my station's 128k stream if you want to hear SimpleCast in action.
______________
