List of stations shutting analog Feb. 17

The FCC has placed added conditions on some stations that want to make the switch Tuesday. As of Friday, it was not yet clear how many would meet those conditions. These stations are marked with a (1).

_ Maryland

Salisbury: WBOC-TV (CBS, Fox) (1)

Uh oh! Someone should tell WBOC to tone down their "We are shutting down analog 16 on 2/17" annnouncements. I was watching Craig Ferguson and they ran a crawl telling us of the 2/17 shutdown ... for TEN MINUTES!

When a station constantly reminds you of 2/17 and then changes its mind they can say "My bad." :(

When a station does this and then beats you over the head with it, that's another thing. ;D

Seriously, the modify time limit makes me

"The Federal Communications Commission on Wednesday night denied WBOC's request to turn off its analog transmitter on Feb. 17." "As a result of the FCC's ruling, WBOC will be scaling back all of our on-air discussion about the DTV switch."

I can't wait for WBOC's latest announcement. ::)

WKRG-TV (Mobile, AL) announced yesterday during its 6pm (CST) newscast that it would delay its analog shutoff until the new June deadline.
http://www.wkrg.com/technology/article/wkrg_puts_the_dtv_switch_on_hold/23587/

Semi-hilarious in that announcement it was a sudden departure: Literally no earlier than its 5pm newscast that same evening, WKRG ran a packaged story telling viewers they would be shutting their analog transmitter off next Tuesday (February 17th), showing the button that would be pushed and everything.

So for all of the complaints about the government mucking things up, the individual stations themselves are having fun confusing viewers all on their own. ::)

Um, WKRG can't drop the analog because the FCC won't let them. I don't see how this is the fault of the station.

Let me guess...

"We are shutting down analog 16 on 6/12, not 2/17"

...ad nauseum, 24/7, until the new shut off date.

If they were going gung ho about it before the old date, maybe they'll be just as gung ho in the damage control department.

I asked this in another shutdown thread and I don't think I got an answer.

Apparently the FCC stopped all of the big 4 networks in Mobile from shutting down. WPMI has serious issues with their DTV signal on channel 47. Could Newport Television get away with leaving WJTC's analog on instead with a simulcast the 6 and 10 PM news from WPMI? This would allow them to get to work on WPMI's new DTV facilities on channel 15 and try to get the bugs worked out so we won't have to deal with all the signal problems WPMI currently has on channel 47. Or is Obama intent on having the networks stay on in analog instead of the indies? As it is right now I have to download most NBC shows from the internet because of all the analog dropouts and video tiling on WPMI makes the shows almost unwatchable. The problems are the same with the cable TV feed and a 95% OTA feed. The analog feed on channel 15 is crystal clear, I just have to rip all the wires out of the back of the entertainment center and hook up the antenna for one show every 3 nights or so... it isn't worth the trouble.

WTTE is heavily telling it viewers that they will turn off their analog tower some time around 10PM Tuesday night. WWHO just a text crawl. Don't know when WWHO will turn off their analog tower on Tuesday.

Well since my TV have an NTSC/ATSC tuner I have WWTE and WWHO analog channel "on" to see if they're going to display a message about the analog shutoff.

In those markets where all four major-network affiliates proposed to go off on 2/17, the FCC refused permission. Mobile/Pensacola is one of those markets.

It seems to be the network affiliates they're insisting on continuing coverage -- they've denied permission in markets where PBS stations would remain on the air. I think the point is that viewers are used to finding emergency information on the network affiliates and likely won't find it on a CW or PBS station.

Columbus Ohio Early shutoff

WTTE will ceased analog transmissions on 11:59 PM tonight. No word on WWHO

WCMH, WSYX, WBNS, WSFJ, WOSU will ceased analog transmissions on 06.12.09

Fort Myers market...

In less than an hour (Noon ET) WINK-TV, WBBH-TV "NBC 2", WZVN-TV "ABC 7" and WXCW-TV "6 TV" will shut down analog.

I put my indoor antenna onto my TV's 75 ohm TV/CATV input at 11 AM eastern (it has a separate 75 ohm Digital Antenna input). All of the analog locals I've ever had in Hartford/New Haven were still on the air. WHPX-TV (ION) channel 26 of New London, CT had the continuous crawl along the top alerting their viewers of their analog switch off by the end of the day. (The same thing was on their analog cable channel 10 signal with Comcast of New Britain.)

Presently, my indoor antenna is sitting atop the top sill of my second floor bedroom's south facing window. The only low-power signal I get a trace of up there is WUTH-CA channel 47, Hartford's Telefutura affiliate (also shown on WUVN-DT 18-3). When I had the same antenna resting a few feet over and lower on the bed, a bit of WRDM-LP (TEL) channel 50 started to come in.

My question about the Fort Myers/Cape Coral market: Was there any station left which still identified on air with their actual analog channel number? Like WBBH-TV/DT, WCTX-TV/DT (MY) in New Haven, CT identifies as "MY-TV 9", since most cable companies in the Hartford/New Haven market place them on cable channel 9. They're really analog channel 59/digital channel 39.

Full-power: no.

From NBC-2.com:

Digital TV switch today

WBBH "NBC 2" did their analog shutoff live during their noon newscast.

You can view the video.

WKOW here in Madison has the video of their analog sign-off posted online as well; the station pulled the analog plug at 1PM this afternoon (after All My Children). The voiceover accompanying the well-done historical montage is provided by Bob Lindmeier, Channel 27's chief meteorologist and a 29-year veteran at the station.

WKOW-TV ends its analog signal, becomes WKOW-DT (click on the "Featured Video" link for the montage)

Someone needs to forward this story to the general managers of the Mobile/Pensacola big 4 affiliates. Using the argument that they can't be expected to make the transition during hurricane season, that's a good one. The FCC better allow them to do the switch now or the FCC will be facing the possibility of lawsuits from the residents of the gulf coast and/or television engineers for putting their lives at risk or even worse, killing them.

I can see the headline now, "Obama's edict to the Mobile & Pensacola network affiliates costs the lives of crew members installing a new digital antenna, film at 10... scratch that, film when we can get our station back on the air.... and where's our FEMA/bailout check to fix this mess?"

Update from New Britain, CT at about 7:20 AM eastern, using an Insignia digital converter box, resting next to my Sanyo 26" LCD HDTV:

WUVN-DT (UNI) channel 46 of Hartford must be off the air because I'm showing nothing whatsoever. Did a total scan first and then went to 46 with the tuner manually. Nothing.

WHPX-DT (ION) of New London is now on channel 26. The signal meter is also showing a much-improved signal over what I'd get with their old channel 34 signal.

While I'm here, does anybody know if somebody will use channel 42 for digital? My box hesitates on that one channel, as if it's trying to lock on a signal.

Columbus Ohio Update:

I was surprise that WDEM CA DT flash-cut on 11:59PM EST 02.17.2009. When I tuned to 17-0 on my HDTV it was displaying "snow". I direct input 17.1 and WDEM comes up. There is a message displaying on WDEM CA DT that they are working on/testing their digital signal. Right now 17.2-17.4 is turned on and displaying color bars. No word if they are going to multicast their digital signal. There digital ERP is 1.05KW. The picture quality is a lot better than the old analog signal.

IMO I thought GTN TV23 and WCPX LP48 would be the first low power OTA stations to go digital.
