I also recall an interview with Conrad in which he complained about that Lincoln Mark IV they made Cannon drive. In 1991, the Senate hearings that eventually confirmed Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court were very controversial. due to Anita Hill's testimony alleging sexual misconduct. She testified on a night when CBS was covering a baseball playoff game. The network put both on split screen, alternating the audio feed from each location. This basically ticked off everybody, since neither event was being covered properly. ABC and NBC had no problems junking their prime-time lineup for full coverage of the hearings.
I wonder, since the hearings were going on that day, did CBS split the screen for the Falcons-49ers game, since that game was on Sunday of that week, and was seen only in Atlanta and the Bay Area? I watched that game on one of the CBS transponders on satellite, and i don't remember seeing any break ins from Dan Rather during that game.
There is another sports event i tend to overlook, and that's the 1991 Ryder Cup in Kiawah Island, S.C. NBC had the coverage, and the amazing thing was that NBC stayed with the Saturday action until just before darkness fell, and ran that portion commercial free. I don't know if that's the best golf telecast I've seen, but the 2000 US Open likely tops that.

I don't, either. I was trying to watch both games on two TVs(the baseball game aired on an independent station in the Bay Area, while KPIX had the 49ers). If the hearings were acknowledged, it must have been a brief summary during between inning/quarter breaks. No split screens.
FWIW, today marks the 50th anniversary of the last episode of The Fugitive--which brought in monster ratings.

IIRC, the top rated show TV show ever at the time, and it stayed on top until the M*A*S*H finale in 1983

MASH actually supplanted the Dallas episode.
Another one that is sports related would be the 1981 NCAA Tournament, where NBC decided for the first time to introduce a policy of switching from game to game. While it had been done on the NFL during blowouts, it was the first time such a policy was used on the tourney. And it set the idea that the networks could switch from one game to the next.
Arguably the coronation was the most significant TV moment in the UK, simply because so many people brought sets especially to watch. Obviously TV would have caught on eventually, but it would probably have been a slower growth.
Other Royal events, like Diana's wedding and her funeral would undoubtedly make the list.
Several big story lines in the soaps- the death of Dirty Den or the wrongful conviction of Deidre in Corrie had the nation gripped. And we too waited with baited breath to find out who shot JR
