!! Listen to 61 Big WAYS Later Today (FRIDAY) on XM !!

Great time for a discussion of this wonderful station which I bet many readers know nothing about. 61 Big WAYS far surpasses anything on Charlotte radio today, even though Charlotte was really not much more than a small town back in the 60s. Still, "no. 1 in 30 counties," I'd like to see the present 61 WFNZ come close to that, or even any of the 100K FMs. Listen to 61 Big WAYS on listen.xm.com for free....
 
You know, I've always been impressed by 630 WIRC's -- sorry, can't get away from Heritage calls -- signal. Only 1kw and they get great mileage out of it and the night signal's not bad, either, considering they were a daytimer until the mid 80s, I think. I wonder if they could boost the day signal any higher -- 5kw?
 
I was in the old Big Ways building a few years ago. What a spooky feeling I had, walking those halls and seeing things growing out of the floor - and down from the ceiling! That place should have become home to the NC Radio Hall of Fame!

Too late now, they tore it down last year. One of the few Charlotte stations I never got inside of!
 
I knew the building was torn down. CBS used it for storage for a while - lots of old office furniture from all over the country - and most of it ruined by the leaking roof.

It was a incredible building in it's day. A beautiful drive into the site with a grove of birch trees. Large glass wall from the bullpen style office and a showcase control room studio just inside the main entrance. Lots of working studios in the back part of the building along with offices and a really large break room.

It was have been quite a sight with Jay Thomas working from that studio!
 
I finally saw the article after I got off the computer last week. I get the Observer home-delivered.

Imagine 74% of teens listening to one station!
