LISTEN TO THIS: PRO-FM FROM 1986

I'm currently going through hundreds of tapes and uploading them all to a private server for storage. So as I continue this monumental task, I am finding some pretty cool stuff. Here is a clip of one of the best DJ's around. David Simpson shows how its done as we flashback to 1986. Download at the link below and enjoy!

Re: LISTEN TO THIS: PRO-FM FROM 1987

Not that it matters that much. But I verified that this clip is not from 1986. It is actually from April 1987. That is all.

Very cool! Did you roll tape during Jimmy Gray's Show? Or Big John Bina at night from 1987? Do you have anything
else from PRO-FM specifically, June '87?

You are in luck because I am certain I have Jimmy Gray and probably more. I will post this material as it's found.

Very cool stuff... it's nice to hear an unscoped aircheck every once in a while. It sounds pitched up though. Was that how it aired or is that your recording?

Why does he start every break with "alright..."? I don't know too much about Providence jocks from the 80s since I didn't grow up in the area, but doesn't he sound a little like the Greaseman?

The recording was exacty as it was aired. Nothing pitched up. Nothing manipulated. Something you should know about David Simpson though is that he had a very cool laid back delivery most of the time. Even when he got excited he still sounded cool. Once in a while he would fool around and let out a slow belching noise as heard in the posted clip at the top of the hour ID. They became more and more frequent as time went on. It was a pure goof. The guy was very comfortable on the air and it showed. It was his pure confidence that made him such a good jock and so much fun to listen to. I called him a few times and he was no different. He loved to have fun with the audience and it showed.

It could be that the speed of the tape player that recorded is different than the tape player that played it back. I've been able to correct this with cool edit in a few cases.

Very cool!.....I was hired to replace David back in 1980 when he was doing nights at then powerhouse WICH-AM in Norwich, CT. During the 2 weeks between leaving my current gig at the time (WSUB AM/FM in Groton, CT), another jock you may know, David Nagel also left to go to WDRC on Hartford, so I got an immediate bump up from nights to PM drive. But I never got to hear much of Simpson until he went "north", which seemed to be the career path at WICH. Another of my contemporaries who was in the Providence market for a while was newsman Chris Camp. There were others, too, but my mind goes blank now. Point is, nice to provoke the portions of the brain that still hold memories.

Very good stuff. I especially like him talking about late school buses. Now if we only had live jocks rather than VT' ing or syndicated programming in the afternoon. Then maybe parents would be more aware of where thier kids are and why they are not home yet at 10 o'clock at night or the East Providence situation this week.

That aircheck shows proof of public interest and should probably be submitted to the FCC while they consider 24/7 staffing and localism from stations.

Good Stuff.

I'm currently in the process of digitizing my audio cassettes. I'll eventually post all the interesting material that I find. I've got about 200 tapes total that I'm working on. I've got about a thousand Stern tapes too. 997 to be exact. But I'm not going to spend a year encoding all those Stern tapes. That would be insane. At least I think it would be insane. Yeah.... I'm pretty sure it would be insane. That could mean that I might actually do it. hahaha
