Listener Reactions / Drops / Phoners

Here's one for you: I've been able to get listener reactions, phone bits and drops with voices that sound in the 20 to 30 year old age range. I'm trying to locate ones with older sounding voices, perhaps in the 35 to 50+ age range for music appealing to an older demo. Most of the services that offer these drops aim for the A/C or CHR market with the younger demo. Has anybody found a reliable source that caters to this particular sound?

Is GoldMine still available from ABC?

It is, but they're only offering it for terrestrial stations on a barter basis. I need it for a netstream, which they currently don't have any way to setting up some sort of arrangement.

checkout TMC's Jabberfish...available on buyout or do what I do, hit the streets with a minidisc and a mic.

Enjoy!

James

My bad. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Actually I would love to get copies of the Goldmine series disks just to listen to. Since I can't legally use them on the netstream I would at least be able to study them in context and build similar elements by hand, which would be legal since I wouldn't be using their pieces. This would cut down on the creation time tremendously. I had one person share a segment that I was able to replicate with a similar song and other production library elements I had on hand so I know it can be done - it's just having the idea bank handy that would make life easier.

James,

I actually had subscribed to Ian Sturgeon's service prior to TM/Century picking it up. While he's got a bunch of great stuf it still sounds like the 25-34 year old demo and while some are useful, most of the drops are more suited for an A/C or CHR format.

Where have you've gone to do yours? Malls? Special events? Any good way to get people on the street to sound excited and up, as the few times I've tried this people sound deadpan and dry - and this just doesn't lend itself to making a good promo!

Bill

Bill:
I get mine at events, but not every event will work. The best have been when folks are standing in line waiting to get into a concert. Of course, you can't just tell a listener: "Can you sound more excited, please?" That's why I approach them like a game show host. I'm excited..I just start talking to them, asking questions about the event or the station, or their clothes...whatever. The flash recorder is running the whole time. Some will open up and some won't . For those that do, I'll feed them a line. I want you to say 'plays more music'...if they deliver it flat, I go: What? I don't believe you!!. The other secret is to always keep the mic pointed at them. Dont mic yourself you'll miss something.
Good luck.

Thanks on shedding some light with a few great tips there. I think they'll come in handy since it looks like I'll have to roll my own liners. I can usually find people to do the phone reaction stuff and make it sound right but trying to get the "man on the street" reaction stuff has always been a challenge. I'm going to give those a try.

Great advice above, I don't have any problem telling a listener to sound more excited especially since I do the editing. Just talk to them and another way is to encourage them to listen to the station because most people get excited that they will be able to hear themselves. Also be careful about malls, and other private property. We had permission from the mall management to tour the mall and record people, obviously security didn't know and escorted us out, even though they followed us around for over an hour and half just trying to figure out what we were doing before escorting us out. just some thoughts.

James

Thanks for the added advice, James. I can only imagine the mess that could happen if mall management knows you're there but mall security has no clue. I know one of my local malls has one of those survey firms reseident in there and they're always out grabbing people for polls and such. Perhaps working with them may be an avenue to canvass the shoppers, since they're already established there and do similar actions every day.

Here's another one related to the topic: Do you have each person sign a written release to use their voice? I would assume you would have to just to be covered in the future.

Bill

This is why you roll the minidisc constantly, from the time you ask them "can I use your voice and have you say stuff for station XZY", then if they say no I move on if they say yes it is on tape. Keep that raw minidisc data, for "just in case" Also I don't have them say last names just first names, if i'm doing name related liners, but if they do say last names, I edit them out afterwards before the product hits the air. Just my two cents.

James

Good stuff, James. I'm going to give it a try and see how far I can get. There's a couple special events in the area coming down the pike and since I know the folks who put things together I'm sure they'll give me permission to do the man on the street thing. With luck, I'll find some useful bits.
