It is interesting seeing discussions about radio from the outside. What kind of interactions or discussions have you heard out in the real world or on other forums unrelated to broadcast?

Bluetooth stopped working on my car today so I thought I would see what was on the radio. Every single station has their own stupid morning show. They tell a joke or say something stupid and then laug

Honestly, a bunch of keyboard tough guys on some obscure gun discussion forum aren't indicative of the vast majority of any form of media consumer. I treat such discussions with less than a grain of salt. That, and if you asked, their favorite musical artist would likely be Ted Nugent. That in itself would tell you how relevant their opinions are.
 
The poster says 'I just want to hear music.' OK, there are stations that do that. Just change the station to one that does.

On the other hand, I can show you a bunch of comments from the complete opposite side, complaining that radio DJs don't exhibit enough personality, and radio needs to provide more than music with commercials.

Typically, the criticisms I read apply to one station. But radios offer lots of stations. They don't all do the same thing. They don't all have morning shows. Some just play music. You can't generalize.

Very few. Probably the most recent comment regarding radio I saw on a local Facebook group was someone who considered a particular bit on the syndicated Brooke & Geoffrey Show racist. That was ~6 months ago.

Now, to these particular folks if Ted Nugent had a morning talk show, they'd be all over it.

It really points out why message board comments aren't relevant when evaluating formats on commercial radio. (including ones here) Why? Because we don't have demo information on the person making the comment. If they're using a gun site, we can assume they're gun lovers who are mostly men and mostly conservative. Very likely the morning show isn't targeting them. They're more likely targeting their wives. It's rare when both husband & wife like the same radio station.

Quite often I'll see comments about a radio format where they wish a station would play more 70s music, and you immediately know the demo of the poster. If you read comments that the poster doesn't like chatty morning shows, then it's likely the poster is an older man. Because morning shows are built around topics that appeal to people in the 25-49 demo.
 
Come to think of it; there's the next format for derelict AM stations; Gun Nut Radio. They could have a morning show featuring the morning zoo of: 'A.R. and Shotgun.

On our local Reddit, there was a conversation about a CHR morning show that's been on since the 1990s, and it was that the posters felt the male host was being a jerk to the female host and others who had come and gone from the cast.

Visiting 4Chan you can see similar, even more white nationalist takes on the media too. Doesn't mean it's a healthy or rational environment to discuss all things media.

I don't mean for this to be just about the link I posted. Discourse could have been from knittinghelp.com or your local facebook groups. We can discount this feedback, but the truth of the matter is these people used to or still listen to broadcast radio, and aren't happy with what they hear.

As you say thousands of societal sub-sectors also consume media. Broadcasting is exactly that; attempting to reach a broad audience. Furthermore, now the Internet and social media have allowed for specific targeting of splinter groups. The idea that radio would be in a position to please everyone is and always has been, a completely unrealistic concept.
 
On a related topic of listener perspective, i can tell you something ive learned in the last 20 years. It's not really because of a direct conversation where a few listeners told me this.

But reality isn't reality at a radio station, what a listeners perception is is what reality is to them.

At stations like WDDH/WKBI, i was one of the more recognizable voices and was on often.... and one thing I learned is listeners associate the most recognizable/most often heard voice with whos responsible. And in small towns, word spreads quick, especially with bad stuff and its hard to correct once that fire gets flamed.

So often times, at WDDH/WKBI and other stations.. I handled things that were WELL outside my job or did lots of extras.. cuse I want the good reputation of the station to remain intact, and when things went wrong... I was often the one that heard about it from listeners.
