We (the UK) have a construction industry station on national DAB transmitters - Fix Radio. The music is a broad mix of classic rock, classic hits, EDM and current pop (presumably an attempt to please everyone at work). A typical day's programming includes things like the "Bald Builders' Breakfast" and specialist programming focusing on different trades.
It seems to be quite successful commercially - it's full of targeted ads for that specific audience.
One factory I worked in allowed the factory workers to change the radio station (speakers throughout the factory) each hour (this was in the late 1980s), one person selected listening to static for an hour (I couldn't tell if it was AM or FM static from in my office).
One factory where I worked in allowed people to bring in their own bluetooth speaker on the weekend and play whatever music they wanted. Headphones were forbidden, but they compromised on that one. One work station would be blaring Latin music, another one hip hop, one classic rock, etc.
Then one night some guy got his hand stuck in a machine and nobody could hear him calling for help. He lost a finger, and we lost our ability to listen to any kind of music whatsoever.
I'm a production supervisor for an industrial facility in NJ. Most of the guys wear airPods or something similar. It's "against the rules" since hearing protection is supposed to be worn but not cracked down on unless there is a big problem. Personally, I'd rather not spend my day being a babysitter. A lot of guys only wear one ear bud so that they can hear people.
Most guys are happier when they have a distraction to get through the day and seem to perform better. Most listen to Pandora, Spotify, or Apple Music. I preferred SiriusXM or podcasts.
Desk sized speakers are allowed where mechanics or electricians are working on projects in areas that customers/clients are not present. Classic Rock is always the go to.
