Listening to an interesting broadcast

I brought my portable HD radio receiver to a local high school baseball game and all of my high school's games are on 96.7 FM WCOE. But I changed the tuning region on my radio to display numbers like 91.1 to 91.15 instead of it going straight to 91.3 for example and when I went to 91.25 fm I could hear the commentary on WCOE but when they went to a commercial I could still hear inside where they were broadcasting. I'm not sure what I was listening to but it was pretty interesting.

Just wondering what process WCOE was using to send their remote back to their station for putting it out over the air? It could be they were using a transmitter of some kind (like an old MARTI unit) to do that and you tuned in to its output or a harmonic of its output. Although this was some time ago, you might make contact with the people at WCOE about it. Usually, personnel from small stations are quite approachable so they might be able to provide some answers for you.

One thing I know is they use a cell phone to broadcast and farther away from the station it sounds more muffled and low quality. If they go over to another school to play it doesn't sound as clear, especially if they go to Indianapolis to play the state championship.

Also, a short time ago, I brought my portable HD radio to the fair because both WCOE and WEFM were broadcasting there and I tuned to 91.25 fm and it worked once again. But apparently they both were on 91.25 fm because in one area of the fair I heard WCOE's broadcast and in another area I just barely heard WEFM's broadcast.

I tend to think the quality would be really bad especially with the sound of the crowd being heard behind the announcer.
