I went to Chicago with my HD Radio to listen to the two stations running two streams. (I do not have a radio capable of the HD-2 stream yet). I was surprised that the audio quality held pretty well. A little more compression but the highs were still there.
I think we engineers are still learning how to process HD Radio. All in good time perhaps.
Agreed, AM is like night and day. If you process FM properly, it can make a decent difference. from what I have heard so far, it appears that the processing for most HD stations are trying to match the analog sound. I am taking a slightly different tack.
People say why do I need my talk station in HD? Well if and when you hear it you will know. It is rather pleasing to listen, less fatiging.
