LISTENING TO INTERNET RADIO AWAY FROM COMPUTER

Sounds like a dumb, newbie question..and maybe it is.

My computer and DSL modem are in a room downstairs. Upstairs, in my bedroom is a phone jack with DSL signal on it. Could easily be filtered.

How do I listen to Internet radio in the bedroom? Do you have to have WiFi?

What equipment do you need to buy without spending a fortune. How do you tune stations, etc.?

Thank you.

Wi Fi, in my opinion, is the most sensible because it doesn't tie you to one room. There are many Wi Fi devices that can tune in Internet Radio, some dedicated, and some not. I have many Wi Fi solutions in my home for internet radio in different rooms.

1) Roku Soundbridge M1001. These things are about $150, and they are really nice. Optional digital output to a receiver, or standard RCA plug outputs as well. Wi Fi and Ethernet supported, presets supported.
2) Sony PSP (Yes, PlayStation Portable) and an inexpensive set of PC speakers. Plug the speakers into the PSP headphone jack, and you have internet radio you can listen to anywhere within range of the Wi Fi router.
3) XBox360 with Wi Fi and a PC running TVersity (free) - Internet radio on the TV while you game

I could go on, but you get the idea.

The Chumby is new, and seems kinda cute. Haven't played with one yet though.

I guess you can expect to spend up to $200 for a good solution, but I think that price can only fall as time goes on...

Get a Whole House Transmitter, plug it into your computers audio out, select a frequency and listen all over the house on any FM receiver. Part 15 compliant and will cover about a three hundred foot radius in stereo.

CC Crane sells them and so do we at gulchradio.com. They work very well. Easy solution.

You can go the Chumby route,

or what I do, is use my smartphone, Motorola Q with Windows Mobile 5 on it, and a great program called Resco Pocket Radio. Only costs 14.95, and it comes pre-loaded with tons of channels, and you can add your own!

I do something similar. I use a program called Mortplayer. You just add the URL, and that's it! That's how I listen to my station (EdgeFM.com) when I'm not at home.

the CCrane FM Transmitter is the perfect solution for me. I have an FM radio (at LEAST one!) of one kind or another in every room of the house. And, a good portable to take out to the pool. All are tuned to 98.5 where they pick up whatever is playing on my computer via the FM transmitter that's plugged into the audio out jack. Thousands of streaming stations or my iTunes library, whichever I want to chose to listen to. At the remote receiving/listening point, of course, I also have the choice to turn the dial to any of the local am and fm stations.
