Listening to KRTH stream

I have been listening to K-EARTH a lot lately on line. Boy, I hope when I get old(er) I hope I don't end up like Charlie Tuna and spend every weekend working at KRTH in L.A. Oh wait, yes I do!

He sounds sooooooooo GREAT!

How do they compare with the CBS chain's other principal classic-hits outlet, WCBS-FM? Haven't heard KRTH but CBS-FM is doing an excellent job IMHO--I'm a particular fan of Bobby Shannon's midday show and Broadway Bill Lee in afternoons....

Roberto...ya just gotta stream K-Earth....words don't tell the story.

That's all

I think the difference between CBS-FM & K-EARTH are about the same as WABC & KHJ. CBS-FM is more personality driven. The jocks are a little bit laid back. You can tell (or it appears to be) they play songs they want. Sometimes they play different versions of songs we all know that I haven't heard before. Last week they played a version of Elvis's Suspicious Minds that just knocked my socks off. Never heard it before. Ziggy (one of my favorites) does all the imaging for them. His voice just adds excitement everytime you hear it.

KRTH follows the classic Drake tradition. Tight format. But their play list seems to be large. Charlie Tuna can say more over an :12 second intro than most jocks can say in an hour. They use the classic Drake jingles. I am not sure who the imaging guy is -maybe Howie Castle? More subdued than Zig but sounds great. Maybe his voice fits the laid back Southern California lifestyle.

I like both stations. They are great to listen to. Both are very successful in their markets. I wonder why they aren't copied in other markets? There are still a lot of unemployed jocks out there that can pull these formats off.

(1) I'm glad they're not copied. Emulated maybe, but not copied. Oldies 104 was a good radio station that sounded like Buffalo. Credit Tom Schuh for that.

(2) I wonder why Dan Neaverth isn't doing a regular morning show. You'd think WECK would run some lines to the guy's house, ISDN, hi-speed Internet, Marti, whatever, and put him on from 6 to 9 every morning. Maybe he'd want too much money. KB Redux didn't bomb because of Neaverth, it bombed because it was poorly programmed and produced.

(3) Hard to imagine jocks in NYC playing what they want. This is serious business with a lot of money on the line. If anything, the jocks took ownership of the playlist and made it sound like they decided to play the song. Smart jocks. Orchestrated chaos.

While some of the K-Earth jingles are acapella they don't sound like the Johnny Mann Singers that did the original Drake jingles (They are also using some fully orchestrated jingles).  The imaging guy is former CKLW, WRKO, WLS, KHJ and one-time K-Earth morning man Charlie Van Dyke.  Charlie has been doing imaging for radio and television stations for many years now. Last I heard he was doing some work for Channel 4 in Buffalo.

Both stations do sound very good. I think that K-Earth would probably be closer to what we consider an "oldies" station while CBS-FM has taken the Classic Hits approach.

Charlie Van Dyke that's it! Should have known it. He, also, did the voice work for News 10 Now in Syracuse - now YNN.

As far as the jingles go, when you listen to the stream they use a different jingle package when they go into a stop set. They usually fill it with music and use a whole different set of jingles. The rest of the time, they use the classic Drake jingles.
